This Laté 521 aircraft made a demonstration tour on this side of the Atlantic, a tour for which covers exist. The aircraft ended up at anchor in Pensacola Bay, but a hurricane blew in and caused it to capsize, ending its airborne life.

Some years ago Jay Stotts was judging my exhibit and mentioned that his mother had a photo of a Latecore at a port on the east coast but he didn't know which one. I wondered many times if it was indeed the 521(before wwII) or maybe later one of the larger 631s after the war. Maybe this answers that question. David Crotty

The photo is likely to have been a shot of the "Lt. de Vaisseaux Paris," the 521, which toured the Caribbean in 1935. A real ugly duckling, but the interior featured a kind of central ballroom fashioned of beautiful wood. Definitely a heavy aircraft, and apparently not hurricane-proof. The aircraft was salvaged from Pensacola Bay and, in refurbished form, effected a transatlantic round trip in 1937. Then, in 1939, Guillaumet and St. Exupery flew it from France to New York as a demonstration of its capability to serve in the North Atlantic. The outbreak of war put an end to those plans. Wikipedia says the Late 521 flew direct from Port Washington (Pan Am's pre-war New York base) to Biscarosse, but Peter Berry's Botwood, Newfoundland log has it listed on 27August 1939 (so did it pick up fuel there?) M West
