Re: Wikipedia link to AAMS site
Dan Gribbin
I went back to the Wikipedia page "Airmail" and noted that someone had deleted the link that I created under "External Links." So I guess the technique that Jamie used on that page to get to the AAMS site is the best we're going to be able to offer, but I plan to go through the process of adding the link one more time. I added external links to the AAMS site on two other Wikipedia pages, "Airmail Stamp" and "First Flight Cover," so we'll see if those links remain on the pages.

Dear All, There should be a link when entering "crash covers", "air crash covers" or "crash mail" to both the AAMS and the Wreck & Crash Mail Society, whose website is www.wreckandcrash.org. Regards, Ken Sanford Ken from my iPad

I checked out the Wikipedia "Airmail" page and clicked on "American Air Mail Society". This took me to the Wiki page for the American Air Mail Society. The link to the AAMS website works from there. There is also an "Airmail Stamp" page on Wiki. Dan- could you add the same link to this page? Checked to see if web searches would bring up info from the "What We Collect" list on the homepage. I tried a couple of regular browser searches - "Pioneer Airmail Covers" provided a link to the AAMS website homepage as did "Polar Aero History". "Crash Mail Covers" and "First Flight Covers" did not have a link to the AAMS homepage but did link to the "Catalogs and Books" page. "Catapult Flights" search did not provide a link. I would like to request that anyone posting on our aerophilately group please include their name after submitting comments. We are able to see an email address from an individual but need to know who it is from. Thanks David! Jamie O'Bannon From: "GreyOldDave decrotty@... [aerophilately]" To: "aerophilately@..." Re: AAMS officers needed (numbers corrected)
GreyOldDave
Sorry that I took a little liberty with the numbers in this message. The APJ costs about $37K after advertising income. The Vol 1 and Vol 2 issues of the 7th edition of the catalog cost about $70K. Volume 3 (Polar) was not out when the June 2016 Finance report was distributed but it was printed in the traditional way. Additionally we have about $118K of publication inventory (much of which we have had in storage for many decades) of which we sold about $4.7K in the 2015-2016 year. We do need experienced business and hobby persons to help us run the AAMS. David Crotty From: "GreyOldDave decrotty@... The society is at an dangerous point. It is down to 850 members and brings in about $16,000 in dues each year. That sounds great except that we spend $46,000 a year just to publish the APJ. About $12,000 of that goes to the editor.l We also just published two great new volumes of the catalog with at least two more volumes coming soon. That again is great except that we also just spent $50,000 each to publish 1000 copies of each when we probably will never sell more than a few hundred each. We need a president who knows enough about publishing to help us get on track. We do have a bit of cash in the treasury but it will not last long. So my question is, do any of you have the skills needed to help the AAMS through this? Do you know someone we could recruit? We do have a small group of members trying to resolve this, including myself but we need some people with these skills to make it work. Can you help the society? Let us know. David Crotty

Re: Latecoere Lt de Vaisseau Paris F-NORD
GreyOldDave
From my reading of Berry's book there were several trips by two different Late 521s The F-NORD flew to and from Foynes and Biscarrosse on 15/7/28 The F-ARAP flew to and from Foynes and Biscarrosse on 6/6/39 The F-ARAP flew to and from Ft. Washington to Botwood to Biscarrosse on 3/8/39 The F-NORD flew from Ft. Washington to Botwood to Biscarrosse on 27/8/39 This book would not record a direct flight from NY to Biscarrosse. I an certain that this is not all there is to these trips. David Crotty From: "Ken Sanford kaerophil@... [aerophilately]" To: "aerophilately@..." Wikipedia says the Late 521 flew direct from Port Washington (Pan Am's pre-war New York base) to Biscarosse, but Peter Berry's Botwood, Newfoundland log has it listed on 27August 1939 (so did it pick up fuel there?) M West

The photo is likely to have been a shot of the "Lt. de Vaisseaux Paris," the 521, which toured the Caribbean in 1935. A real ugly duckling, but the interior featured a kind of central ballroom fashioned of beautiful wood. Definitely a heavy aircraft, and apparently not hurricane-proof. The aircraft was salvaged from Pensacola Bay and, in refurbished form, effected a transatlantic round trip in 1937. Then, in 1939, Guillaumet and St. Exupery flew it from France to New York as a demonstration of its capability to serve in the North Atlantic. The outbreak of war put an end to those plans. Good article in Wikipedia. Dan Gribbin. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lat%C3%A9co%C3%A8re_521
