Interesting First Flt Imperial Airways

GreyOldDave

Attached pdf has scans from a 6 Aug 1939 cover posted at Botwood Newfoundland for the first flight of the Imperial Airways transatlantic flight by the aircraft Caribou. I also include the text from Jack Ince's book on Newfoundland rates for that flight. It is postmarked at Botwood and Montreal on 6 Aug 1939 and finally 12 Aug 1939 in St. Johns. The trip included stops at NY, Montreal and Botwood

This cover has 20 cents postage and is NOT registered. According to the Post Office Circular the following should apply:
To England, Ireland         30 c
To Canada                       10c
To USA                            15c

It seems clear that this cover didn't get to England or Ireland. So what does this 20cents cover? Is it just paying for the trip from Botwood to Montreal and back????
Thanks for your help.

Google Groups is used by the APRL to host the Philatelic Librarians Round Table. Works perfectly as far as I can tell. Check with Scott Tiffney if you’ve got any questions.

Folks,

There is some panic about the future of Yahoo Groups, which we use for our communications.  I'm not sure if it is just panic or if there is some reality that Verison may stop supporting it.  Verison has bought up a number of services like ATT and Yahoo and there seem to be no suggestions as to what they might do with them.  I will try to keep you posted.

There are a couple of other services that are available and that are doing a bit of advertising toward Yahoo customers.  One is known as groups.io that is run by the guy who claims to have started Yahoo Groups some years ago.

We may change to a new service in the next few weeks or we may be able to stay where we are.

Keep you posted.

Re: Historical Covers

I have not answered because I could not understand the question. However, let me suggest that there are no limits to what you collect. Just go to the the exhibits at stamp shows.  Exhibitors can try to show a very wide range of history or narrow it down to the health stamps of one city in Argentina. There are 10 frame exhibits showing tiny variations of one single stamp.
Postal history mailings probably started in Roman times when couriers messages. you need to look at some amazing exhibits that show mail before the time of stamps.

I have a variety of Covers.  Mostly FF from 1926-1945 some earlier and some later.  I was thinking if there was actually a span of years than I could narrow my focus.  WWI and WWII sound interesting.

Just thinking out loud.

To answer your original question, "Historical Covers" can be anything, from the 1st airmail covers which were from the balloons during the Siege of Paris in 1870 & 71, up until the present.  The recent covers may not be considered historical now, but they will be some day.

Hello:  My opinion, it depend on the collector and what they may collect.  First flight covers flown today may be considered historical by some collectors and not by others.  Best, John Johnson

A few weeks ago we got a report from an AAMS member that some of the APJ archive copies had odd overprinting from other pages.  It turns out that this was an effect caused by the change in versions of the editor software used. This happened to issues from 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.  Vickie has done the repair job on these and we are happy to note that the fixed issues are now on the website at

The APJ archives are complete from the beginning in 1929 through 1965 (our scan worker is taking a well deserved break) and from 2012 through 2016.  We keep one year hidden hoping to attract a few new members.

We also note that the scanning of the Aero Philatelist Annals is complete (with a few missing issues still at large) and to be found on its own page:

John- Thanks for getting back with me.  I also have the complete bound version but I'm looking for loose Annals.  The bound version will not scan well at all and I sure don't want to break the binding.  There will be a mention of the ones I need in the next APJ and I know APRL and the Collectors Club have some but was trying to locate the few missing from other AAMS members.  Do you have any of them loose?

I have finished the bulk of the Annals and they are on the AAMS website for anyone to use.  Great research housed in the publications from 1953-1982 with Index.  I still need Vol 4 No 2&3 and Vol 5 No 1&3.  Can anyone help with these?  Thanks

As we are preparing the Canadian Airmail Rates chapter for the upcoming The Airmails of Canada and Newfoundland Catalog I made the mistake of suggesting that we might look at Newfoundland rates as well. Chris jumped on that. It happens Jack Ince had searched the Newfoundland Post Office Circular that was published between 1937 and 1949 for air mail information.  He made Xerox copies of appropriate pages and used the "real" cut and paste method to make it into a book meant for sale from the Canadian Aerophilatelic Society.  I took this book and did some photo editing to improve readability and then subjected it to OCR.  There were lots of little OCR errors that I had to fix but it looks fairly good at this point. Of course every time I go over it I find a few more little bugs.

One point I noticed was that before 1942 most of the rates were Air Mail Fees that needed to be added to the Ordinary (surface) Postage. It wasn't obvious what the value of these ordinary rates were and Jack had not searched for these. I contacted the research desk of the Queen Elizabeth II Library in St. John's and the librarian Joan Ritcey there kindly offered to go through the 2000 or so pages of the Post Office Circular (POC) held in that library (but not as yet subjected to OCR).  I also looked through the library's collection of Newfoundland Almanacs that are now in online digital form. Finally there were some rates to UPU countries that were in early issues of the POC but not in later ones.  For this I consulted Robert Dalton Harris's book on UPU rates with the help of Diane DuBlois. This effort gave us the table of "ordinary postage" that can be found on the last page of this book. There are a few small variations in this table compared with the tables in Walsh's Newfoundland catalog.

So I just uploaded this somewhat improved copy of Jack's book on the Aerophilately Yahoo Group.  Hope some of you find it useful.

This effort provides us with a 30 page book.  The object originally was to fit it into the AMCN catalog. That book as it is right now being assembled is pretty thick. Thirty more pages would not work well. It happens that most of the bulk of the book is tables which can, with some grief, be condensed. For example a two column table that takes up a whole page can be made into a six column table that fits into 1/3rd of a page in many instances. I did a little test and it looks like I might be able to condense it to 10-13 pages.  Hmmmm.
