Re: This Year's Field Day Patch

Hey Pete. Hope all is well. Our club decided not to do FD from the club site, and everyone is doing their own thing, then submitting under our club to combine the points. Over the past few months I became very interested in mobile HF (got my Icom 7100 installed in the car) and got a Tarheel 2 screwdriver antenna mounted on it. That led to doing Parks on the Air, and loving it. A couple of weeks ago I decided to pull the trigger on a Yaesu FT-891 and it came in this past Tuesday. What an awesome little radio! It does 100 watts and for RX, I would say it's almost as good as my Icom 7300 in the shack. Also have a Bioenno 20aH battery now too. I made a 40/30/20 Inverted V antenna that has connectors that disconnect if I want to work the other bands. I took it to Sam Lewis State Park today and within 10 minutes I had everything ready to go including the antenna in the tree. In less than an hour I had 45 QSO's. I am putting a 10x10 EZ-Up canopy in my backyard, using the new FT-891, my new antenna, run battery power and do Field Day old school this year. After FD, I plan to get a backpack and start doing Summits on the Air as well.

What is your FD looking like this year Pete?

CTU was held on Thursday, free and on Zoom due to the pandemic.

A YouTube video was made - it is 10 hours total. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEEUpsWUtAA

When the SK's were announced as is done each year at this event, only callsigns were given. I found this to be less than desirable, so I made my own list attaching names to the callsigns.

Whats That Path Profiler

Here's a site new to me: http://www.heywhatsthat.com/profiler.html

It gives a side view of terrain between two points - useful for example to see if you have a clear path to a repeater.

Pete,

Okay thank you for the update. I'll start listening since I'm still working from home.

My remembrances:
Marty was a Penn State electrical engineer, graduating in 1960. He held other degrees, including a Masters in EE and a degree in anthropology.
He lived near Annapolis, MD, but set up a contest station, W3SO, on Wopsononock Mountain west of Altoona. It is one of the highest points in central PA and the station was a force in VHF and UHF contesting.
Marty joined AVRA when it was formed. Being a member of PVRC, with whom he contested, he would nevertheless give his points for the PA QSO Party to AVRA.
PVRC moved their club contesting circle for VHF contests to the northwest so that Marty's station could be included in their point totals.

Scott,

Also, at least so far, they have only taken check-ins from WPA counties, which they have broken into 4 regions. There were 80 check-ins today.

They may have asked at the end for others; I'm not sure. Just don't want you to be surprised at what you find if you tune in.

What are the frequencies and modes? It was requiring a log in and I'm not in WPA.

Good job Pete! Since I began my fitness journey, I don't seem to have the same fire to work contests like I used to. This might be my highest amount of QSO's I've done all winter. The bands were decent, except nothing on 10 meters. I just put HF in my car, so I might do some rover for PAQP this fall (stay tuned).

Re: NAQP CW

Pete W3WC

OK, just bought this switch on Ebay. Not meant for antenna switching but should work.

Re: NAQP CW

Pete W3WC

I only made 38 Q's, on 40 & 20.

Getting on for this contest helped me identify antenna issues.

My 40 Meter dipole had corroded contacts, for which I lowered it, found them at the center feed point and scraped them clean. The 80 Meter G5RV would not tune, likely due to not being fully extended due to loss of a natural antenna support tower (a tree) from an ice storm.

As a result, I have a plan to get back to a full-size half-wave dipole with ladder line feed for 80. The G5RV was a compromise anyway, from when I broke one of my two Heathkit antenna tuners.

I really need a good DPDT antenna switch to switch the two ladder lines, but I haven't been able to find one that is rated at a kilowatt.

I need to impose upon the good nature of my neighbor to utilize another tree near his home as one end of the full-size 80 Meter dipole.

End of report. 73
