Hi, All,

Much to my surprise, after losing the first two games at home, Mt. Lebanon came roaring back to sweep the 9 in Mudville to take a 3-2 lead in the series.  The series now comes back to Western Pennsylvania as the Terriers try to close things out.  But, they have yet to win a home play off game and Mudville has their ace, Steve Carlton on the mound.

Game Six:   Carlton v Bannister

It was a rematch of game 3 starters.  Bannister won that game, could he beat Lefty twice?

Both pitchers were had their A game going early.  Through three innings the game was scoreless and neither offense showed much "offense."

Bernazard led off the fourth with a double.  He advanced to third on a Madlock single.  Clark followed with a single to score Bernazard and Mad Dog made it to third.  Gamble walked to load the bases.  Manager Rogers kept the infield deep and he got his double play, but Madlock sored.  2-0 Mt. Lebanon.

Bannister was unable to start the 5th, coming down with an arm injury.  Don Hood came in and retired the side in order.  He began to tire, though, in the 6th.  With two outs, Brett singled (his second of the game) and Bell followed with another single.  Murray walked to load the bases.  La Roche came in to pitch and got Oliver to pop up to end the threat.

In the bottom of the 6th, Madlock homered to lengthen the Terriers' lead to 3-0.

And that would be it.  La Roche, DeLeon, and Howe shut down the potent Mudville offense and Mt. Lebanon advances with a 3-0 victory and a 4-2 series victory.

Mudville  0-5-0
Mt. Leb.  3-9-0

W:  Hood (1-0)
L:  Carlton (0-2)
S:  Howe, 2

I really did not expect this result.  After game two I was sure the Terriers would go home early.  Kevin, you had a great season and you could have easily advance instead of me

Take care,

Steve
P. S.  I forgot to save the script. :-(

Steve, how does Hooks Foremen work with today's deep bullpens, but with pitchers who have far fewer innings than in the 70's and 80's?

Hooks Foreman is an underrated manager. You need a deep pen - really can't use him for pre 1970s or so games - but he takes advantage of the usually much better relievers that were around in the 70s upward.

Re: ASSL '82 Seltzer Bayou games 3 and 4

Would have loved to play a game 5, but it wasn't necessary.  Bayou easily swept the series.  Dan Driessen's 2 run double in the 6th broke up a 3-3 game and the Bayou pen made it stick in a 5-3 win.

Game 4

Seltzer blew a 7-0 first inning lead as they just could get outs as Bayou scored 7 runs over the final 3 to win 11-8.  Bob Boone's 3 run homer was the game winner.

Bayou moves on.  Good luck to the remaining teams.  Seltzer was good enough to make the playoffs and got lucky to win a series.  That luck was erased by a better team.

After losing yesterday in extra innings, this is a must win for Mt. Lebanon, especially with Carlton starting for the 9 in game three.

Game Two  Lamp (10-15) v Vuckovich (11-13)

Mudville got the scoring started right away--in the top of the first.  Brett walked  and stole second.  Bell singled, Brett stopped at third.  One out later, Oliver singled, scoring Brett.  1-0 Mudville.

Lamp pitched like he was a right handed Carlton.  He gave up only one walk in the first three innings.  But, in the 4th, the Terriers finally got to him.  With one out in the 4th, Madlock hit a double.  One out later, Gamble singled Mad Dog in and the game was tied at 1.

The Terriers would take the lead in the 5th.  Templeton led off with a double, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.  2-1 Mt. Lebanon.

It was  still 2-1 in the 8th inning with Reed on in relief for the Terriers.  Once again, I wonder why I play him, as Bell homered to tie the game!

Once again, we headed to extra innings.  In the bottom of the 10th, with Fryman on the mound, Murphy led off with a walk.  Mumphrey singled Murphy to third.  With a man on third and no out, the Terrier fans were getting excited!  But, Bernazard grounded out, Murphy forced to hold.  Madlock followed with a fly to center.  Murphy tagged up, but was thrown out at the plate by Bruno!  Game still tied!

So we go on in the 11th, which has been Mudville's magic inning.  With two outs, Bruno, who saved the game in the 10th, homered to left to become the hero in the 11th.  Mudville takes a commanding lead in the series 2-0

Mudville  3-6-0
Mt Leb.   2-7-1

The Mudville 9 (99-63) travel to Mt. Lebanon (104-58) to play the Terriers in Game One of the LCS.

Game One saw knuckle baller Charlie Hough taking the mound for the 9, while Dan Petry (16-10) took the pill for the home squad.

The game started as a pitchers' duel, with both starters shutting down the opposition.  Petry took a no-hitter into the 7th.  But, in that inning, Murray led off with a double.  Oliver followed with a single, Murray stopping at third.  Carter hit a sac fly to right, Murray scoring the first run of the game.  Bruno hit into a double play to end the inning.  Score 1-0 Mudville.

The lead did not last long.  Chambliss led off the bottom of the inning with a homer to right.  Score 1-1.

And so the score remained through regulation.  The game went into extra innings, but still nobody could score.  Finally with one out in the 11th, Brett tripled for the 9. Bell hit an infield pop up for the second out.   Reed was brought in to relieve a tiring Howe and promptly gave up a single to Murray, scoring Brett.  A wild pitch moved Murray to second and he scored on a double by Oliver.  Carter flies out to end the inning.  Fingers gave up a single in the bottom of the inning, but held on for the save.  Game one goes to the visitors by a score of 3-1.

Semi-finals play c-file and backup files attached. C-file should be okay; if not try the backup file. Play a game at a time; send in results, wait for a go ahead and/or f-file and repeat. You know the routine.

Good luck.
