aprsisce32 and the the FT 991

I missed that when I glanced through the manual before. I went to the "Plug/Connector Pinout Diagrams" in the manual and the USB connection was not listed. With this information, you (Robert Allen) should be able to get the FT991A to interface with either UZ7HO or Direwolf. I am much more familiar with Direwolf, but the interfaces should be similar. IMPORTANT: 1. Determine the CAT/PTT ports from the FT991A from within your operating system. The manual says you need the SCU-17 driver. FT991 manual pages 126 and 127 seem to have good detail. I suggest using the PTT port as this is usually more responsive (hower CAT PTT has worked as well). This is the COM port you need to use in UZ7HO or Direwolf for PTT. Follow their manual on how to configure 2. Determine the sound devices of the FT991A from your operating system (USB AUDIO CODEC) Then use the appropriate settings for the audio input and audio output in UZ7HO or Direwolf. NOTE: The above 2 steps are required to get the radio interfaced with the computer. This "creates" the software TNC which controls the FT991 and converts the RF/Audio to computer usable information. This is the most important part as APRSIS32 only deals with that "usable information" from the TNC. 3. Configure the output of UZ7HO (or Direwolf) as an AGW server port and/or KISS server port Take note of the port number!!! 4. In APRSIS32, create a new RF port (Menu >Configure >Ports >New Port...) For Type: {choose the port you enabled - AGW or simply(KISS) } Name: {any fitting unique name} <Create> Next popup is Device Choose <TCP/IP> For IP or DNS: address of the computer or use LocalHost For Port: use the number from #3 above for the mode you are connecting to (AGW default is 8000 for both apps, KISS depends on app: 8001 for Direwolf, 8100 for UZ7HO) <OK> Back to the port configuration, choose the settings you want for this port (check boxes) <Accept>Now you should be now have a functional setup between your radio and APRSIS32. Since Direwolf and UZ7HO are software TNCs, you don't need a hardware TNC. A hardware TNC connects through a serial connection from the computer, not through a sound card.

The FT991A has a USB port (USB-B) which carries the proper signals for CAT/PTT via two virtual serial ports and audio via two virtual USB audio ports. All via one single cable to the PC.
I believe the 991 also has this also.

Robert, UZ7HO software does work with the FT991/A and therefore in turn APRSIS  It's all in the settings. The screenshot above is not from an actual radio, it's using a SignalinkUSB. When I can get to my FT991, I will get accurate settings for you. There are known issues with trying to use the High-Speed soundmodem for 9600 baud from UZ7HO, but that is more to do with that specific radio than it is to do with the software driving it, whether it is soundmodem from UZ7HO or direwolf. You do need to remember to download the
ptt-dll.zip from the UZ7HO web site. But for basic APRS communication at 1200bps, the FT991 is a perfect radio, if not somewhat of an overkill. I am not familiar with the FT991. You don't give much detail as to what isn't working on the FT991 - not able to transmit is too generic. Does the FT991 go into TX (PTT LED ON)? Or do you get TX LED come on but no TX audio? In general, you will need 3 aspects to use APRSISce/32 with UZ7HO sound modem or Direwolf: 1. Sound card for audio input and output from the computer with UZ7HO Direwolf This could be the internal sound card on some newer radios 2. PTT capability - This can any means of causing the radio to go into TX mode a) CAT control of the radio that UZ7HO can utilize b) PTT circuit from either the computer IO (such as a serial port pin, IO pins on a raspberry pi, or even the IO pin on a sound card) MOST IMPORTANT is that UZ7HO or Direwolf has a means of activating it. c) VOX control on the radio or as part of the sound card (such as the SignaLink USB) 3. Properly configured APRSISce/32 RF port (most likely AGW port or KISS over TCP port) The first 2 items are outside APRSISce/32 control and need to be setup and working first. If you are already receiving packets from UZ7HO to APRSISce/32, the after you get 1 & 2 working on your FT991, it should work with TX. If, after you the sound card and PTT working and you then need help with the APRSISce/32 interface (#3 above), post your question with your RF port information for more help. Robert Giuliano

I d/led a program from UZ7HO called sound card modem114. But I still can't transmit. I have USBCODEC on both input and output.
I guess I should mention that this is my first time with aprsisce32. Also I hope to use Dire Wolf some day. That is another can of worms. -- Robert Allen |
