MFJ Dropping out of KISS mode...

Is there a configuration setting to have the MFJ power up in KISS mode? Or do you have any idea why it reset itself to start with?

unfortunately, no.

when we ran mfj tncs for the bbs that needed the mfj to be in kiss mode, we had to replace the eeprom with a kiss only one, that was aftermarket and i have no idea where to get them now.  besides, i think they cost about the same as a tt4 or otusb if you could find them now.

JKISS is a KISS only EPROM image from G8BPQ version 4.08 that has been around for at least 20 years that will convert an MFJ or any TNC2 clone into a KISS only system. We used this on a BBS system in the early 1990's and we used this on an IGate around early 2000 to eliminate the problem of dropping out of KISS mode. The JKISS image made it rock solid. A MFJ TNC220 will require the 220KISS image which is a variant of JKISS.

You can get the EPROM image from BPQ v4.08 and burn your own EPROM.

N8DEU, Tim and WF5X Randy:

Thanks for the replies. I just talked to MFJ on the phone. (Before I opened my e-mail) They confirmed that I need a different EEPROM (or re-flash).

I was impressed that they would take time for me with my antique TNC. I have an OT2m on order from Argent, That should solve the problem. I was just trying to get going while I wait for Scott to build it.

This old TNC is getting a bit long in the tooth. I'm unlikely to spend any $ to update it, especially since I have the OT2 coming anyway. It'll still work just fine for regular packet, and I can use it to monitor the local packet channel. I even have a similarly antique desk top computer that'll be just right to go with it.

I think I saw something in the wiki where I can set an APRSIS-32 parameter to restart the TNC link every X minutes. That might be a work around until my OT2 gets here.

Lynn won't toot his own horn, so I'll toot it for him. He has been helping me off list as we sort this thing out. He asked me to upload logs to him from my incident of APRSIS32, and that was how he diagnosed my TNC problem.

Lynn, you're a prince, Thanks

All MFJ TNCs? I have an MF 1278T, and it's definitely stuck in KISS mode. Simply power cycling it does not result in the Cmd: prompt returning. I needed to close down APRSIS32 in some orderly manner (I forget the wrist action I had to employ) to get it back.

The TNC was not new to me, but I think the ROM is stock.

Ah, well the 1278 is special... it's a multi-mode device, not just a TNC.
MFJ might have decided it would be a good idea if you paid over $300 for the device that it remember it's last mode/state.

IIRC you should power down the 1278 and remove the jumper inside that connects the memory battery "for five minutes" according to the MFJ instructions that came with mine many years ago - - -

Ok, good to know. But that would result in a complete reset back to factory defaults. Simply returning it back to where you can do Packet radio with a terminal emulator was what I was trying to do, without having to re-program alll my settings (call sign, active radio, etc.).

Ok, I suppose I did not read enough or pay attention. I do remember I would get my 1278 hung up and the only thing that worked was the full reset.

Hi Chris,

Well, it's not hung, i.e. it's still working just fine in KISS mode.  I just had a hard time getting it out of that mode when I was transitioning between XASTIR and APRSIS32.  I have the TNC on an A/B serial switch, and if I ever want to use it on "regular" Packet radio on the other PC again, it will be really annoying trying to remember how to un-KISS it.  Maybe a slap across the face?
