Final update. The problem was not with my audio levels. The problem was with the USB to Serial adapter as supplied by West mountain Radio. This adapter required both RTS and DTR to be enabled in order

Hi Stephen - the audio portion is working FB. My problem is that as soon as I select the serial port and accept it, the radio goes into transmit mode, and the only way to shut it off is to select none
