Just what do you specifically mean by that statement?  If you don't get anything from the TNC into a terminal emulator on the APRSIS32 machine, then APRSIS32 won't get anything either.  You need to track down the proper COMM port and settings such that SOMETHING comes in to a terminal emulator.  Once that is working, we can go forward with port types and everything else.

From the logs you provided, COM5 is being opened, but there is nothing coming in to be read.  You've got a connectivity issue between the TNC and the APRSIS32 PC that needs to be diagnosed with a terminal emulator on that machine.

Just because the device was COM5 on the Windows 98 machine (assumption on my part) doesn't mean that COM5 on the APRSIS32 machine is the same adapter and port.  You may also need to "joy plug" the handshaking signals as that is another difference between operating systems.  That means tie RTS to CTS and DTR to DTR and CD on the TNC end of the plug.  Some USB cables don't pass these signals through and some TNCs require them before they'll send out any data.

There may be a TNC setting to use software handshaking instead of hardware handshaking.  This can also help.

Strange website redirect on that DNS, but we don't use it for web access, but for port 14580.  Here's the site that actually lists the regional rotate DNS names that are available.  http://www.aprs2.net/

Regional Rotate Addresses

Please use one of the following addresses to connect:

  • North America
    noam.aprs2.net
  • South America
    soam.aprs2.net
  • Europe & Africa
    euro.aprs2.net
  • Asia
    asia.aprs2.net
  • Oceania
    aunz.aprs2.net

All users should be connecting to port 14580 the client-defined filter port.

To use simply KISS, you need to place the KPC3 in KISS mode by external means. There are a couple of apps out there and a batch file to place the KPC3 in KISS and start APRSIS32   Then when you exit APRSIS32, it will send the commands to take the KPC3 out of KISS mode.

I am not near my computer to find those bstch files and apps.  There must be an old thread with the info on them.

The log file says you are using the Kenwood port type. Your TNC will not respond to Kenwood TNC commands.

Use the simply KISS interface.

ALL aprs server respond to the standard port numbers. It’s part of the server software. You will want to connect to port 145980 and then send a message to “server” to set up your port filters. Some programs do this automatically when you connect to the server on port 14580. Part of the setup screen has a filter option you can input. For instance if you add the filter m/250, you will only get data from the stream that is 250 kilometers radius from your reported location. You probably don’t want the full aprs IS stream.

Here are some pages that describe the filters and syntax:

http://www.aprs-is.net/javAPRSFilter.aspx

http://www.cx2sa.org/texts/en-aprsfilters.html

Lynn,
Thanks for the info.  I had visited the noam.aprs2.net url looking for the port number but did not find any reference to APRS,   The website appears to be the host for some form of HTTP server product called NGINX.

What kind of radio?  I use a Motorola CDM1250 and had a similar issue and I looked at everything (I thought) and it turned out the receive audio in on the DB9 end of the cable to the TNC  had a bad solder joint and had broken loose and once re-soldered it all started working.

Subject: [APRSISCE] RX/TX From radio/tnc

Hi All.

I have an issue where after the last update a couple months back, my computer has lost all comms with the radio/tnc. I had everything shutdown for a month or two till I had more time to play with the settings. Today I have reinstalled Build 2020/05/01 21:21. Still can not get program to communicate with tnc. Using a USB to DB9 cable which is known to be good. Port 5 at 4800 baud. These settings have not changed since 2012. TNC reports accurate and readable strings at 4800 when using a laptop plugged into the DB9 port on the tnc.

Any idea's on what to check next?.

Thanks

If I read his comment correctly, he used a terminal emulator from a different PC than the one that runs APRSIS32.  So it's likely a bigger issue than just speed and such.

Did you check if the speed of the software, tnc, and ports were the same? Because if you can see the aprs traffic with yout terminal program that means that you radio is well connected to the tnc and the tnc to the computer. So it's not a big problem that need to be solved I think.

Several things:

1) KISS mode is designed for use with Kenwood APRS radios' internal TNCs.  It is not designed for a KPC-3+.  You'll eventually want either Simply(KISS) with the TNC locked into KISS mode, or read http://aprsisce.wikidot.com/tnc-kpc-3

2) Changing <Open/CloseCmd>s should not put the program into an infinite loop, unless you entered invalid XML.  But even then, it should revert to the backup configuration file.  If you still have it, can you send me the APRSI32.XML that caused the loop?

3) You need to use a terminal program from the SAME PC as where you run APRSIS32 to prove anything.  Saying that the TNC works in a terminal program from a different machine doesn't help at all.  Unless you're somehow running APRSIS32 on a Win90 PC?

4) Even from the Win98 PC, if you can read all of the packets, your TNC is not in KISS mode.  In KISS mode, the headers are bit-shifted left and are not printable characters.  You should only be able to read the payloads which are (usually) printable ASCII.

5) VHF ok indicates that the COMM port was opened, not that APRSIS32 understands the data being received from that port.  The reason this is asked is that some people have multiple programs accessing the COMM port which Windows does not allow.  In this situation, the VHF ok would have likely cycled between VHF open and VHF delay.

6) The APRSIS32 updates (or did you mean Windows updates?) should not have affected port behavior.  But even so, you should find the old version .EXE still in the directory with a .yyyymmddhhmm extension.  You can try firing up the earlier versions, but we really need to get the latest version debugged and working for you.

So, what we still need is:

a) Use a terminal emulator on the APRSIS32 machine and see if you can talk to the TNC.

b) Enable and tell me what the Port<VHF> trace log says when you disable and enable the port.

Hi All.

ICOM 207H hooked into a Kantronics KPC 3+ TNC the mode I have been using was KISS mode. not simply KISS mode which I have tried numerous times. I do not have any custom  <openCmd> that I know of. Modified 2  of those strings yesterday which sent the program into an endless loop where as I have to power down the computer with the on/off button as Task manager was flashing and useless. If I power down the TNC and use Terminal program from my win98 laptop and power up I can see the data. And yes I get the message APRS-IS ok and VHF ok messages in rolling status window when every thing should be working. This happened after the last update. There was an update and a week or two later there was another update and nothing after that.I am stumped as to why.
As for drivers for USB-DB9 cable, Have also tried that and have replaced that cable also with a known good cable. Went to com 8 and same thing. no comms with TNC.
