You must make sure APRSIS32 is CLOSED when you edit the XML file and open it back up after saving the changed file.  Otherwise, APRSIS32 will overwrite your changes when you close it.

Either that is the problem, or you're editing the worng (sic) file.  Close APRSIS32 and check the revision date of the file you're about to edit.  It should be the current date and time.  If it's not, you need to find the APRSIS32.XML file that is in the default directory from which you execute APRSIS32.

FT8 Contest

Lynn Deffenbaugh

To all,

Just in case any of you are wondering why the recent poll was posted about HF locator modes, I've been tinkering with JS8Call for use between myself, my son, and my son-in-law all here in Florida in the event of a major hurricane.  We've all put up 40/80 NVIS antennas and have seen the mode work, but thankfully we didn't need to use it this season.

If any of you haven't heard of JS8Call, it's a low signal, keyboard-to-keyboard chat mode that is based on, but incompatible with, the FT8 low signal mode that is in turn a successor to the JT65 mode that, I believe, was originally written for Earth-Moon-Earth bounce communications, hence the need for low signal capability.

Well, you may have noticed (or not) a Configure / Objects / New JT65 menu option that has been in APRSIS32 for a few years now.  That option would require you to point to your JT65 log file which would be periodically scraped for gridsquare references which will be placed on your local APRS map.  Since both FT8 and JS8Call continue to include gridsquare references in some of their transmissions, I've implemented (but not yet released) parallel object types for those modes.

And since there's an FT8 contest running right now, here's what I've copied on 40m over the past 2 hours.  That's 274 stations across the world, but most of them are in the US.

But then again, a path must have opened up between Florida and Japan recently as well:

Follow the link I provided to update your APRSIS32.XML file to indicate the development version.  Remember to close APRSIS32 before editing the XML file.  After starting up with the <Update.Development> tag value changed from 0 to 1, About should offer the 2019 Development version and all should be well in your GPS world.

Alright then. With the update to the Development version Things are finally working the way they should. In GNSS mode I'm getting a solid fix now with lots of satellites in use.

Related info-

The WIn 10 com drivers can be a real pain to deal with. They insist on installing a virtual com port driver which is not recognized as valid by the aprs software (and other programs). Additionally, some of the newer programs require the Windows Sensor driver, notably the WIN10 Map program.

I found some info that worked for me. You have to follow ALL  the steps-

First disconnect from the internet so Windows can’t find the new driver.  Then plug in the GPS receiver to the USB port.  If it hasn’t been plugged in before Windows will probably assign the standard COM port driver to it.  If it has been plugged in before but only recently, the new driver has probably already been downloaded and it will use the new driver.  If so, open Windows Device Manager.  The receiver will appear under “Sensors” instead of under “Ports” as it used to do.  Uninstall the driver using Device Manager, being sure to click the box that deletes the driver files.  Windows will then revert to the standard COM port driver and the receiver will appear in the Device Manager list under “Ports”.

This is what we want but if we leave it like it is, Windows will download the new driver as soon as you connect back to the internet again.  To prevent this from happening we need to tell Window not to do this.   Do this by connecting to the internet, waiting for the new driver to download and the receiver to appear back under “Sensors”.  Then use Device Manager to “Rollback” the driver to the previous version.  This option is in the “Driver” tab in the Device Manager.

So, a success story. For now...hi.

You need to turn on "Development mode" in the XML file.  It's a manual editing thing with a Notepad (not Word - must be a simple text file editor only), done while the program is NOT running.  After editing, run the program again and check the About box for upgrading to the current version.

Look for a line that looks like <Update.Development>0</Update.Development>

Change the "0" to a '1", save, and restart.

Good luck,

I can do an all satellite dump, or specific brands, hi, if required. The U-connect software is very flexible that way in allowing you to pick the satellites you want to use. What would you like?

What version are you running?  I believe only the latest Development version supports non GPS NMEA sentences.

http://aprsisce.wikidot.com/doc:development-version

You need a 2019 version, not the 2012 general release.  Check under About.

Since we determined that my earlier mentioned gps problems were a result of lack of signals to the internal gs in my Panasonic Toughbook I have acquired a new external USB  unit with built-in antenna and 15 feet of cable.

Rather than get a boring old standard gps unit, I got a GNSS capable unit.

For those who don't know the difference, a gps unit only receives  the American gps satellites, whereas a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receives signals from all the navigation satellites:  the American GPS, the Russian Glonass, the Chinese Beidau, the EU Galileo, etc.

So, I connect the unit to the computer, fire up the aprs software, set the comm port and lo' and behold, I'm showing 17 satellites on the status line at the bottom of the program. But, still no fix.

Using the software provided by U-Blox (U-center), I changed the units parameters so that it would only receive GPS satellites. Going back to the aprs program there now a couple of less satellites shown, but, still no fix.

Following is a dump of the NMEA using only GPS satellites-

How about a dump from other satellites i.e. gloness?

More GPS stuff

Roy VE7DH

Following is a dump of the NMEA using only GPS satellites-

wow Lynn, many thanks.

I must now disable email from the list and ONLY read it here on the web-interface.

what caught my attention was that a "Reply" about [APRSISCE] Disabling APRS-IS from Rob "kb8rco=yahoo.com@groups.io" appeared via Email. yet I never sw the original post. And that made me remember that sometimes I just never get replies ... or so the email interface tells me. And I have yet to ever see your email vial the email interface .. go figure

this made me remember to try the web interface. There are a couple of guys, such as Rob, who's emails always get thru on the list. Go Figure.

Anyway, I will try you suggestion regards an APRS type port .. though I don't quite understand what you mean ... the AGW port, I use, as AGWPE defines my SignaLink soundcard which is reading off "Data" port on D710 ...and the AGW-Port accepts its input nicely. However, I have not seen anything get DigiPeated from it ...hmmm, I always have it on 145.825 to read 2m Sats ... that wouldn't get digipeated anyway.

Re: Disabling APRS-IS

The passcode provided will allow you instance of APRSIS32 to send data to the internet (APRS-IS), which includes the feeds to aprs.fi.
If you leave the passcode at -1 APRSIS32 will work without any problems, but it will not send data to the internet (more specifically APRS-IS will not accept data from you).
If you enter the passcode, another means of disabling the communication with the internet is in >Enables >APRS-IS Enabled.
Even without the passcode, I believe you can also set filters and get data that matches the filters.

However, if you are sending data over the air, it may reach an IGATE and be passed to the internet that way, even if there is no internet connection at your location.

As for the address, I am not sure where you would enter such information.  APRS typically uses GPS type coordinates, not addresses.  Unless you are referring to the internet address of the APRS-IS server.  Most U.S. users will use NOAM.APRS2.NET and a port of 14580 (which allows filtering as mentioned above).

aprs.fi is just a web site that captures APRS data and puts it into a database.  It will eventually time out and remove inactive stations, but if you want to configure a station to match it and set the correct location...

Passcode for KM4VXF is 21695

This passcode will work for any -SSID (http://aprsisce.wikidot.com/doc:ssids) you choose to use.
Because it is actually the APRS-IS network passcode, it should also work with other APRS-IS client software.

Hello,

Over half a year ago I was experimenting with APRSISCE/32 and trying to figure out how it works. I ended up giving up but I was looking on aprs.fi and my callsign showed up. It seems like I accidentally did get it to work half a year ago and never realized it. The only problem is that I put in the wrong address when I set it up and I am experimenting with APRS modems now. I assumed that I could disable it from APRSISCE/32 but when I reinstalled it and opened it I realized that I needed some sort of passcode. I don’t know if I need it to disable the APRS-IS or you can just do it.

Thank You,

Noah Fodor (KM4VXF)

Re: IGate and ax.25 packet Satellite's (Now local repeater freqs)

Love the QSY feature, Don't have a radio that has the function, but even seeing the frequencies, comes in very handy.

I have 3 Comments:
1. I would interpret this request as kind of a reprogram of the radio
Example:  Start client in my hotel room while on vacation and let run.  The Client adds any frequencies to the radio memory.
Now your radio is ready for use in that area.
Novel idea, but how do you know where to store them? Over write existing, or add new?  How about if it just has a different PL?
2. QSY feature is for "right now".  I see someone add a QSY frequency, I expect to be able to QSY and talk.
I've had a several, frustrating expirences where I've QSY'ed (manually on my radio), called the station, then CQ, and nothing.
It is just part of their message, even when they aren't listening there.  Kind of defeats the purpose.
YES - I know this is different than showing repeaters, EchoLink, and other nodes.
3.The original thread was about AX.25 satellites.
If you don't "know the frequency they are on", how can you "lsiten to the packet" to tell you "which frewquency they are on"?
I believe the request was an APRS or AX.25 client (specifically APRSIS32 feature) that would "know" or "predict" the next pass of a chosen satellite, and tune the D710 to that frequency.  I am guessing you can send the D710 a command and change frequencies as desired.  There are other programs that already do that, so why not run Orbitron, WISP, or some other application and have it do that function.  NOW, if that program had a default frequency that it would go to when no digital satellites in view, your radio with sit on the APRS frequency until a satellite was in view.

It doesn't save the memories (as it could) but there is an APRS technique
supported by several radios to make current voice resources available at the
touch of a button.

someday we could have radio's that listen to aprs , grabs beacons
listing the voice repeaters and programs in the local repeaters into the
radio for hams traveling in the ( new ) area.

Re: DigiPeating and iGate oddities here

Lynn Deffenbaugh

KWD710(APRS) type ports do NOT support digipeating.  This is a restriction because in that protocol, paths cannot be set to include the used (*) bit which is required for digipeating.  Only KISS and AGW type ports support digipeating because in those, the AX.25 header is fully constructed and can include the required used bit.

So, the logs you're seeing from your KWD710(APRS) port show the digipeater logic detecting a packet that it CAN digipeat, so it fully constructs the new packet, but when it passes it off to the port, the port protocol driver (KWD710(APRS) in this case) rejects it because it is a digipeat packet.  Hence the burst of logs for each digipeat-able packet.

If you use an APRS-type port to your D710 or the AGW port to the other side of the radio, the digipeat function should work, provided of course that you receive a packet that your configuration thinks should be digipeated.

I have dozens of such from my overnight test run.

I am trying to nail down a "correct" setup so I can store it as such then revert to someting that works when I (again) mess things up s I attempt to learn.

so what's with the DigiPeat Error?

I appear to have guessed right on iGate:
