Re: Problem seeing my vehicle

Since the 2 devices have the same callsign-ssid, the APRSIS32 "wins out"!

Each device that sends data should have a unique SSID.  This will allow for situations as you describe.  BUT even more important is that any issues with a device or its transmitted data, you know EXACTLY which device sent it.

The TT4 as the "-9" and CAR icon makes sense.  The APRSIS32 could have something like "-10".

This type of setup will ensure both devices show "separately" on your computer screen, but also help troubleshoot issues.

When I go mobile with a TT4 and APRSIS running on a netbook. All RF
setup no internet. Everything appears to work great I see all of the
stations that are either moving or beaconing, but I never see my
callsign appear. I can see the on the TT4 display that I am sending
position data. I also verified my test trip on APRS FI google maps and
all was good.

Any ideas why I am not seeing my position on the maps screen?

Station is the actual callsign-SSID to which the nickname would apply.

Label is what you want the station to be displayed as, provided that you
check the box to the left of Label to enable that substitution.

Comment is what you want the comment for that station to be, again
provided that you check the box to the left of that.

Of course, none of this applies if you don't Enable the nickname itself.

If this is the APRSISCE/32 instance, then you would set up the ME
nickname. If you're talking about viewing your Home station from
another APRSISCE/32 instance, then you'd set up a nickname for that
callsign-SSID, N3AO in your example. To get a different symbol
displayed than what that station is transmitting, you'd select the
desired symbol by clicking on it in the Nickname configuration and then
check the box just to the left of that symbol to enable that override.

Then you'd configure a nickname for N3AO-9 and specify whatever you'd
like to see substituted on your screen.

Best thing to do is to play with it. With nicknames, you can't hurt
anything, other than confuse yourself based on what you configure.

It is highly recommended that every independently operating APRS station be given a unique -SSID, if for no other reason that ease of diagnosing issues.

Does the APRSIS32 instance have a GPS connected?

Does the TT4 have a GPS connected?

If the previous two answers are No and Yes, then you could have the TT4 providing GPS data to the APRSIS32 instance by:

1) Setting GKRELAY to a non-zero value
2) Setting GRELAYBITS to 3 (send both $GPRMC and $GPGGA)
3) Checking the GPS/NMEA checkbox in the APRSIS32 port configuration for the TT4.

Nickname Help

Hi APRS Friends,

Please direct me to the manual page(s) for help in deciding what to put in the following Nickname fields:

Station

Label

Comment

I think I would like to have my Home station display, for example, N3AO, over the yellow Home icon. Would this be the "station" or the "label"?

I think I would like to have my mobile station, for example, to display N3AO-9. And I would like it to say Carter in Blacksburg, VA.

I can't see where to find such specific help on the manual pages. If someone could just email me what to do, I'd be very grateful!

I woke up today to find out that Google Maps are disabled on aprs.fi, and the site is slightly crippled.

Google had noticed that aprs.fi has integrated support for OSM map tiles *and* Street View. I hadn't noticed that the combination of Street View on top of anything else than Google Maps is forbidden according to the Maps API Terms Of Service document. Or I had just forgotten about it when implementing OSM or Street View (there was probably a year or two of time between the two, and probably another year or two since I actually read the lengthy TOS).

Google had nicely sent me a few emails to warn about the unapproved combination, first one already on 5th of March. I had moved away from reading emails regularly in Gmail a long while back, but forgotten to arrange for these emails from Google APIs to go to my primary email address. Silly me. Since I didn't respond or do anything about the situation, they disabled Maps API, which certainly got my attention.

Oh well. OSM support is disabled for now, and I notified Google that aprs.fi is again compliant with the terms. Should be back soonish.

I might put OSM support back later, and remove Street View instead, as OSM is probably more useful in practice at some areas (although admittedly less visual and "cool"). Or maybe make some sort of arrangement where Street View only works if you have Google Maps selected instead of OSM. Have to check with the Google folks if that's OK.

I'll post updates on Twitter (https://twitter.com/aprsfi) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/aprs.fi). Stay tuned.

My mistake entirely, although quite a human one. When did you last read the full text of the license agreement of your new application or mobile phone? :)

Re: Google Maps

pfbram@...

Say, if people are reexamining their Google Maps & APRS code, I'm wondering whether it would be possible to ensure that Google Maps applications retain their zoom-level and perspective when a web page is reloaded.  I know this is at least theoretically possible (Google Maps itself behaves this way).  When I work the ISS/etc. I end up generally using the vintage static map on www.ariss.net instead of the Google Maps -- not because Google owns what I do at work (analytics, docs, drive, e-mail, calendaring, etc.), at home web habits, my firstborn's homework on Google Docs, location, my Android cellphone habits, and god knows what else...  Ahem.

But because reloading the desired zoomed-in view sends it back to a global view.  Ideally, it would be great if someone could make an AJAX/etc. hack that made newly-reported beacon callsigns just automatically appear on the current map overlay, so no user-initiated browser re-loading was necessary.  The other quibble I have with Google Maps is for logging purposes.  I like to "Save As..." the page + map before I close down my IGate, for logging the pass activity.  But I note that the stations & icons on a Google Map overlay aren't saved into position in the static & downloaded HTML snapshot.  I suppose taking screenshots would solve that issue?

Yes, the *xxx* is intended to be a guidance to at least one thing that is wrong with the frequency specification.

I still need to publish a list of what all might show up there and what it means.  But remember, if there are multiple things wrong, only the first will be displayed on any given station.
