When I only have my MacBook Pro handy, I run APRSIS32 on a stripped down version of Ubuntu 12.1 (except for high resolution drivers) as a virtual machine, and I have had no issues, so running it

That was it. I had a nickname in for myself and "Use Nickname" was checked. I unchecked it and
I no longer see a pop-up screen with "Follow KC9LDH-1" in the upper left hand corner.
Problem solved.
