Re: Anyone using a TNC and have it working?
Derek,
Can you Enable Debug Logging and send me a copy of the APRSIS32.LOG and APRSIS32.XML at KJ4ERJ@arrl.net? The sequence is:
1) Turn on Enables / Debug Logging 2) Close the client 3) Restart the client 4) Wait for a bit during which time stations will show up and the KISS thread should connect 5) Close the client 6) Grab a copy of APRSIS32.LOG and *.XML from the default directory and e-mail it to me.
Repeat the same thing with the TNC in TEXT mode (or KISS if the first one was with TEXT) and APRSIS32 configured appropriately.
Hopefully there'll be something in the .LOG file that will help me figure out what's going on. I've got a ToDo item to make debugging these connections easier, but it hasn't been addressed yet.

Hi all,
I have just tried to setup a Kamtonics KPC3 TNC on my laptop. Set Comm port up in Kiss configuration and enabled it (Kiss that is). TNC does not appear to be talking to APRSIS32, have run Ui-Veiw with same TNC and Comm port all OK. Have run Hyperterminal with same TNC and Comm port all OK. I have also tried to run the TNC in Text mode but that does not work either. Has anybody any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Derek M1ARF.

Re: Tiles and zoom and some out of topic and long
This was supposed to go on 02/26.
Interesting!

Hi Lynn,
Just downloaded the Windows version yesterday at lunch.
Pretty slick! I am looking forward to getting it running mobile.
I
haven't connected to a TNC or GPS yet since the machine doesn't connect
to either, nor will it ever. I plan on moving everything to a laptop
this weekend. This laptop has no internet connection except WiFi on my
network. The laptop is an old Compac Armada M300. It will be connected to a
Tracker2 in the vehicle and any helpful tips would be appreciated. Of
course I can always experiment too. I do have an NMEA spigot on my OT2 as
well as the standard serial port running KISS.
I saw this embedded
in the Digest version: "I'm not even sure the program can total space
utilization over 2GB as I'm not sure how big my variable and never expected
someone to download that many tiles before the purger started removing old
ones!"
Do you have a tile limitation with the Windows version? I would
probably only limit tiles to drive space. I am finding I will more trips
coming up and it would be nice to not lose previous downloaded
tiles.
A tile grabber utility would be useful for people without a
mobile internet connection. If there is one, sorry, I didn't see it. There
is more discussion concerning this below about what I have used and have
done in the past.
Have you considered the USGS tiles from the
TerraServer as well? This might be a very useful tool for SAR.
Have
you considered being able to use scanned maps? I recently checked out
a universal map downloaded. I have made a couple of maps using a variety
of tiles. SAR might find this useful as well.
I have to check this
out: "Reversed the Zoom +/- behavior (no cheers, just beers (but I'm
a tea-totaler!))"
So, just how many teas have you totaled? ;)
Have you ever totaled a licorice tea? Yum!
Actually, the zoom change
I will have to check out. The version running as of yesterday seemed
backwards but I didn't follow up with it. Interesting enough, the PS3 calls
my joystick action 'reversed' as do most FPS games. This does not make
sense to me. Isn't the stick pushed forward to fly a plane into the
earth?
I use ExpertGPS (E-GPS) for the majority of my mapping needs.
Actually, this is what I compare all other map software to. I have the GIS
and CAD option pack. I have been using it for almost as long as it has been
out.
My E-GPS topo and aerial tile collection is a good size. Type 1
(aerial) 3.79GB on disk in 442,587 Files, 72 Folders Type 2 (topo) 5.18GB
on disk in 350,089 Files, 65 Folders Type 4 (urban) 68.2MB on disk
in 11,488 files, 26 folders
I have grabbed most of the tiles in the
area I travel in on a regular basis (commuting, day trips and camping). I
also grab tiles along the routes of longer trips, such as my trip to
Arkansas. If your software could use these tiles as well... ;)
I
also have a collection of scanned maps that provide
additional entertainment. I am now experimenting with the universal map
downloader to create a 'scanned' map.
The E-GPS tile tool as a
rectangular box that one draws on the screen and the selected resolutions
are auto magically downloaded. This usually ends up with a nice collection
of tiles that are not needed. Or one can just update the location on the
screen and tiles are downloaded. I recently have put together a program to
simulate a GPS so that E-GPS will get the tiles as the position is updated.
I have to run a route multiple times to get the different resolutions but
it only gets those that are needed to fill the monitor and a few extra. I
can provide a better description of my process if needed.
I have
also played with USAPhotoMaps so I have a tile collection for that as well.
Someone wrote a tile grabber that works, mostly. There is a bug or two. It
only works within a UTM zone at a time and with a limited number of points
for routes.
Appreciate your work on this
software!
Thanks!
Best regards, Fred, N7FMH

I found the tile collection is an interesting item. While I don't use anything else that uses the OSM tiles it is a bone of contention for me. I started using ExpertGPS about 10 years ago. And I have thousands of tiles saved of the topo, aerial and urban variety. I messed around with USAPhotomaps as well. I really didn't want to dedicate another large portion to the same tile set. I looked at TopoFusion as well. That was the end of that; another tile collection. I stuck with E-GPS. I can't say I went wrong, it is a great package.
Can you provide links to the packages you mention. I googled E-GPS, but didn't find any references in the top hits that implied tile caching.
Depending on what tiles they install and/or maintain, you MIGHT be able to share a directory tree between them and APRSISCE.
Hi Lynn, Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that ExpertGPS uses the OSM tiles. James had mentioned that RadioMobile does use the OSM tile set and the file structure is almost the same. At least that is the way I understood his comments. And I have not researched RadioMobile so I have no comment regarding it. I think the point is that standardizing the way the tiles are saved would be handy. In an ideal situation, the filenames would be same as what is served up and in the same tree structure. This was James comments for quick referral: "I use a program called RadioMobile that also uses the OSM tiles for creating a background map. RadioMobile saves the tiles in almost the exact same way as APRSIS32, but with just a slight naming difference. APRSIS32 uses a file structure such as OSM12/748/1334.png whereas RadioMobile saves the exact same tile under the file structure 12/748/1334.png." I notice this in the XML: <OSM.Path>d:\APRSISCE\OSMTiles\</OSM.Path> Maybe James can edit this line to support RadioMobile and APRSISCE? ---- The program I mentioned, ExpertGPS, can be found here: http://www.expertgps.com/I use "E-GPS" for short. I have the GIS/CAD version. It uses the Teraserver tile set. My point was that in the software world that is using the USGS tile sets, everyone has a different way to file and use. Case in point: the USAPhotoMap implementation is totally different when compared with the E-GPS implementation. It requires twice the download if the same tileset is used for each package. My ExpertGPS topographic and aerial tile collection (USGS Tiles/Teraserver) is a good size. Type 1 (aerial) 3.79GB on disk in 442,587 Files, 72 Folders. Type 2 (topo) 5.18GB on disk in 350,089 Files, 65 Folders. Type 4 (urban) 68.2MB on disk in 11,488 files, 26 folders. It is a part of the software from: http://www.topografix.com/There have a nifty free GPS management package called EasyGPS: http://www.easygps.com/ (no mapping) For those that Geocache: http://www.geobuddy.com/BTW, the E-GPS author was the designer of the GPX format or at least very much involved. http://www.topografix.com/gpx.aspDan Foster is another author that has been very responsive to his customers. That is one reason I stay with TopoGrafix. For APRS, I will stay with your software even though the mobile market is your main goal. Everything I see so far is good. First off, you are responsive. This doesn't mean you add everything people want but that you are addressing items on a regular basis and provide answers. Second, the software is expanding. I can only imagine where APRSISCE is heading. And, of course we all have our desires. ;) Thanks again!! Best regards, Fred

Tried correcting the lattitude and longitude in the XML file as you advised but the laptop symbol keeps staying in west Africa whereas I am in Australia.
Everything else appears to be working fine. All other stations including my 2 TM-d710s are showing correctly on the map.
Guess my next question is: In the XML file should I edit the coordinates under "Center lattitude and Center Logitude" or under Prefered lattitude and Prefered logitude or both?
As said, all else seems to work. I am on the T2Texas status page, can send messages from laptop to 710 and back.

That will re-center on you. Zoom on in to a comfortable level (bear with me on this) being careful not to pan the map at all. Close the program with that view.
With the program CLOSED, edit the XML file and fix your Lat/Lon settings. As was pointed out by Colin,. North and East are positive, South and Wests are negative. According to http://aprs.fi/?c=raw&call=VK2JNG-10, you are NE implying that both are positive right now.

According to VK2JNG-12, you want to be somewhere near 35 15 00 S 149 25 00 E (in dd mm ss format). Using the converter at http://www.geocaching.com/wpt/default.aspx that tells us that is -35.25 149.41667 in decimal degrees. These are the numbers you need to enter in the XML configuration file.
Once that is done, restart the client and you should be closer to where you want to be. If that's not exact, find out what you really want, run it through the converter, CLOSE the program, edit the numbers, restart the program and eventually you'll be where you want to be.
I apologize for the obtuseness of this setting, but the program was originally designed for use as a mobile or ate least with a live GPS. I've got a ToDo item on my list (see the most recent release notes on the Yahoo Group) to add a "Set My Coordinate" popup menu option, but I haven't gotten it done just yet.

First, at http://aprs.fi/?c=raw&call=VK2JNG-12 I'm seeing the first indication of the problem. Every APRS station must have it's own -SSID. It's not a good idea to share them and VK2JNG-12 is being used by your Kenwood directly. You need a different callsign on APRSISCE.
jandgandjochem wrote:

Yes I have entered my callsign and SSID being VK2JNG-12 VK2JNG-12 has not directly beaconed to APRS-IS yet. I suspect the password you entered is not correct for your callsign. If you bring up the "Info" popup by clicking on your station (hopefully in the center of the screen), it will list the APRS-IS server to which you are connected, both as a DNS and as an IP address. Use the IP address and point your browser to http://<That.IP.Address>:14501 (note the colon in there). I know the client said :14580, but the status page is at :14501. Once you get the status page, search for your callsign and check what it says in the "Verified" (4th) column. I suspect it doesn't say "Yes". (BTW, Ctrl-F is a quick way to Find your callsign on the status page).
If you need an APRS-IS password, e-mail me directly at KJ4ERJ@ and I'll generate one for you.
Trying to use it with my Kenwood 710. What connection are you using to the 710? Did you configure the correct COM port and baud rate under Configure / KISS? Is the 710 in KISS mode?
I use the com port on the panel of the 710 (Display unit) and via a RS232 to USB converter made by KeySpan to USB com port 7 on the PC. This has always worked fine when updating firmware and saving database etc. Under configure > Kiss I get a window asking for IP/DNS and port. Have not yet configured anything there. When you click the KISS button on the Configuration dialog, click NO to the "TCP/IP Port?" question. That will get you into the serial port configuration page for the KISS TNC interface. Set it all up as you need to.
I have configured the com port on the Kenwood Menu 519 to 9600 and in the program under Configure > NMEA I have 9600; COM 7; Parity None; Data 8 and Stop 1. Does the Kenwood put NMEA GPS data out the serial port? I don't think so. You need to clear all of the NMEA configuration options since you probably used the same port that you need to use under KISS. If you want a GPS, you'll need to provide for another one since I don't think the Kenwood can share that data with the PC while it is in KISS mode.
Note: I can see other local stations appearing on the screen but not my station. BTW On APRS.fi I appear ok as VK2JNG-12 In the scrolling station list, do those stations have * beside them? If so, they're coming from the KISS port (doubtful). If not, they're coming from APRS-IS, which is probably rejecting your beacons without the proper password.

Guess my next question is: In the XML file should I edit the coordinates under "Center lattitude and Center Logitude" or under Prefered lattitude and Prefered logitude or both?
As said, all else seems to work. I am on the T2Texas status page, can send messages from laptop to 710 and back.
I think we are almost there but not quite yet.
Thanks so much. This program is great to use and I am starting to like it a lot.

Ok, I do believe you have your coordinates entered wrong and believe that your own station is not showing up because it's actually somewhere completely different than where you're looking. Before we make changes, try zooming way out on the map and see if you see a small laptop icon over in Africa. If so, click on it and select the Center option, even if it is already set.

Have you entered in an APRS-IS password and followed the on-screen instructions to zoom in on your home location on the first execution?
Yes I have entered my callsign and SSID being VK2JNG-12
VK2JNG-12 has not directly beaconed to APRS-IS yet.
BTW On APRS.fi I appear ok as VK2JNG-12
In the scrolling station list, do those stations have * beside them? If so, they're coming from the KISS port (doubtful). If not, they're coming from APRS-IS, which is probably rejecting your beacons without the proper password.

See
my response to N7FMH to see why this is not necessarily a good idea. It
has to do with what area coverage is desired for the increasing zoom levels, all
of the area originally covered or just the center as if you had manually zoomed
the whole way in at a constant screen center. The client currently does
the former on the prefetch which results in a 4x tile count for each zoom
closer. The latter does a constant tile count per level, but doesn't end
up fetching detail for ALL of the area originally viewed. See the table
at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Slippy_map_tilenames#Zoom_levels
to get an idea of the total tile count for various zooms. For your
suggestion of 15, if you did this while zoomed out to the planet view, you'd end
up fetching (left column is zoom tile count, right column is cumulative
total).

The primary design for APRSISCE is for operation on mobile devices with an active Internet connection. I consider it secondary operation to work without APRS-IS (and hence OSM) access. If the primary function was for offline use, the tile prefetching is actually a pre-population of the cache used to buffer recently accessed tiles. Maybe a sexy name contest is in order. ;)
Got a suggestion, I'll consider it, although APRSISCE/32 isn't that bad, is it? I found the tile collection is an interesting item. While I dont use anything else that uses the OSM tiles it is a bone of contention for me. I started using ExpertGPS about 10 years ago. And I have thousands of tiles saved of the topo, aerial and urban variety. I messed around with USAPhotomaps as well. I really didnt want to dedicate another large portion to the same tile set. I looked at TopoFusion as well. That was the end of that; another tile collection. I stuck with E-GPS. I cant say I went wrong, it is a great package.
Can you provide links to the packages you mention. I googled E-GPS, but didn't find any references in the top hits that implied tile caching. Depending on what tiles they install and/or maintain, you MIGHT be able to share a directory tree between them and APRSISCE. Lynn,
Thanks for creating what sounds like it might just become the top APRS client in the future. We've had a progression of APRS applications over the years, with each one moving the bar higher and higher. Having an author responsive to the needs and desires of the users is a major factor in developing a great application.
Now... onto the nitty gritty bits.
Right off the top, have you thought about renaming the program? Obviously the name reflects the origins of the program, but it looks to be headed to be much more than that.
I finally had a look at the program just over a week ago... I hadn't looked before because of the name, assuming it was for Windows Mobile devices only. I'd suggest not only dropping the CE portion, but also the APRSIS portion. The APRS-IS name is the Internet Service portion of the APRS network. This client appears to be moving beyond that, and encompassing the RF portion as well. Perhaps a new less limiting name might be in order... a really sexy or cool name for the application never hurt.
Can you make it so that the large compass face can be a user selectable display element? I would like to get rid of the big grey circle and NESW labels on my screen.
I love the fact that you use the OSM map in this application. I've been helping that project for a couple years now. It is great that anyone can add detail to the OSM map. Any missing data can easily be added, and immediately becomes available worldwide! One issue that I have however is the way that the tiles are saved to the hard drive.
I use a program called RadioMobile that also uses the OSM tiles for creating a background map. RadioMobile saves the tiles in almost the exact same way as APRSIS32, but with just a slight naming difference. APRSIS32 uses a file structure such as OSM12/748/1334.png whereas RadioMobile saves the exact same tile under the file structure 12/748/1334.png
It would be very desirable to share the tiles across multiple platforms, rather than have duplicate tiles saved for each application. I don't know if there's an "official" file naming structure defined for saving OSM tiles, but if it was possible to override the naming structure to allow the two programs to match up, it would be great. All I would need to be able to do, is to have the OSMXX structure changed to just XX where XX is the zoom level.

Broncus wrote: Is there a reason to limit the prefetch depth? Why not allow the user the ability to download to any depth? I limit depth because of the 4x factor that increasing zoom levels represents. When I say that I pre-fetch the next lower N zoom levels, it means the ENTIRE area expanded by 4x for each zoom level closer. Many times, this is not what the user really wants to see in detail. For instance, why pre-fetch lots of ocean tiles just because the lower left corner of the United States happens to be a peninsula? I would entertain going deeper if the prefetch constrained itself to the same are that would be viewed by zooming in at the current screen size, but again, that's probably not what most users are looking for. Once you get in to a certain area, they really want the 4x expansion as it goes deeper. My own manual method is to get a reasonable area at a reasonable zoom and trigger the prefetch. I then zoom in 2 or 3 times and pan around triggering more prefetches until I think I've got enough queued. Then I zoom in to a reasonable street level and pan around slowly while watching for the fuzziness to disappear. At my origination and destination points, I zoom in really deep to have the final detail and/or back off 1 or 2 levels and trigger a final few prefetchs. The client does do some automatic prefetching of one zoom level further out and the 4 tiles one level closer (along with one additional tile at the current zoom level out each edge of the screen) each time a new tile is fetched from the server. This is in anticipation of traveling into those areas or doing a small zoom for less or more detail. Note that the automatic prefetchs of map tiles due to panning and zooming are canceled if your attention has moved elsewhere (by more panning and zooming) before the tiles were fetched. Manual Prefetch requests are not canceled nor cancellable short of closing the client. In other software I have, the user selects the zoom levels for tile retrieval.
In that same package, the author has also limited the zoom levels to: 1/4M, 1M, 4M, 16M, 64M and 256M per pixel. The maps are USGS topo, aerial and urban tiles from the TerraServer. So you know if that software holds to the same screen size on the retrieval or actually expands the 4x to ensure fully detailed coverage for the entire originally viewed area? I'm suspecting the former where I do that latter. I was also thinking the ability to prefetch all tiles below the current level when the map is moved is possibly useful. Obviously this can be very time and space consuming. But if the user could select the levels he/she needed, then only the levels select would be fetched. See above for the automatic prefetch that has been in the client from day 1 (of OSM support anyway). These automatic prefetches are not guaranteed to be attempted, though, if you keep panning and zooming around. "All" is a very data-intensive word when dealing with the 4x expansion. One reason this is useful to me is that I run a GPS simulator and have been retrieving tiles automatically. This has been useful so far in getting tiles for areas that I am interested in (mainly traveling to and from and though) and it would allow a single pass. If you slow the GPS simulator down so that it doesn't force panning before the queue has worked off (yellow circle expands to disappear), it will at least have pre-fetched one level down and one level up from the current zoom view. Lynn (D) - KJ4ERJ PS. I've got a ToDo to use HTTP/1.1 for tile retrieval that reduces the load on the network and tile server. I'll consider these suggestions after I've been able to do that. I don't want my client to become persona non grata ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persona_non_grata) on the OSM tile servers. Best regards, Fred, N7FMH

Getting closer by the minute here with your help which is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Gerard VK2JNG

Ok, I think you're real close, but not quite there. I really wish I had finished my ToDo item of showing port status better...

Can't get myself on the map yet?? Have you entered in an APRS-IS password and followed the on-screen instructions to zoom in on your home location on the first execution?

Thanks so much for your help.

I'd suggest getting the APRS-IS functions working first and then we can work on the RF side of things.

Thanks again for your help.
I still cannot get my laptop to show on the map correctly.
I think we are almost there but not quite yet.
Thanks so much. This program is great to use and I am starting to like it a lot.

Before we make changes, try zooming way out on the map and see if you see a small laptop icon over in Africa. If so, click on it and select the Center option, even if it is already set.

What map are you referring to at this point? VK2JNG-10 shows up fine on aprs.fi. The raw packets show some transmissions recently:

Force just asks the client to beacon a position when it is allowed to. Do you have a GPS connected to the laptop or are you using a static position?

My question at the moment is: Should the VK2JNG-10 (Laptop running APRSISCE win32) be showing up on the map in your program??? At the moment it is not.
Read about the APRS OK window at http://aprsisce.wikidot.com/screen-features This page also discusses the text that appears below that describing the beaconing features as well as the colored bars in that portion of the screen.
