How about the rest of the answers?

You didn't mention exactly what you expect to be picking up your transmissions, nor how you know they are not being picked up.

Do you believe that radio and antenna combination will actually reach whatever you expect to be receiving your packets.

When you tell APRSISCE/32 to transmit, does the Mobilink TNC actually key up the radio?  Have you listened to the packet bursts on another radio to confirm that some audible signal is actually going out over the air? - This is different than the Mobilink config program just keying the radio.

And what is the callsign-SSID configured in your APRSIS32 instance? - At least this one appears to be VA7DGP which was last heard via the APRS-IS yesterday.

What do you mean by "not being picked up"?
It could mean any or all of these:
You are unable to see the data on places like aprs.fi?
You are not seeing the DIGI'ed signal com back from a local DIGI?
You can't hear any tones on another radio receiver?
Are you sure the tracers are not RX?

For TX issues, the first question would be:
Does the radio PTT work when the APRSIS32 timer hits zero?
If YES, Can you hear packets from your radio on another receiver?

Re: Scroller full of stations, no symbols on map

Mark, KE6BB

I would like to say that I have been following the development of all of the APRSISCE/32 programs since Lynn was trying to figure out WHAT TO NAME THEM, and I must say that it has become the most used of all my Ham related software.  I use it for common APRS functions, and for many things not directly related to APRS such as severe weather tracking, JT8 plotting, determining where a mountain peak is from my location, and many other things.  In addition to a software author, Lynn has been a teacher, teaching me about APRS the way it should be taught, with faithful references back to the APRS specification (APRS101 plus its incremental revisions).  As an Engineer, my career taught me to constantly ask, “What does the requirements document say about this?”  Lynn has demonstrated that this approach works well.  While I may not agree about his choices of menu organization, it is all there and it all gets easier to find the more you use it.  Like any powerful complex piece of software, it can be difficult to use at first, but hang in there and learn.  The results will be worth the effort.

I could go on for several pages, but I won’t.  Just want to say, thank you, Lynn, for the really great times with APRS.

Mark,

KE6BB

I just want to state that I have been interested in APRS mapping since I first became a licensed HAM in 2001.  I have used just about everything that was available and reasonably usable.

APRSISCE is by far the best choice available and it has taken over as the preferred solution for our public service events in Western Washington.  We use it on bicycle events such as Bike MS and RAMROD.  I believe it is also used for the Seattle Marathon.

What makes APRSISCE work is its flexibility.   We can set up custom courses for an event, provide labels for our fixed and mobile stations, zoom in and out to focus on a specific location, you name it.

I am not a computer expert.  I can’t use Linux.  I can usually figure out programs based in Windows if the instructions are clear enough.

APRSISCE is a bit complex to set up until you get used to it.  However in our community there are skilled elmers who can help the rest of us.  In a large event we usually have a couple people who do the mapping configuration and provide instructions for the rest of us.  It works.

The reason I am writing this is to show my strong appreciation to the developer for putting all this together.    I am also grateful that the developer has taken time to provide advice to individuals through this group.

If you are having problems and need help please understand and show appreciation for others who are willing to take their time to work with you.  Our developers and elmers do work that would cost a small fortune if we had to do this through a commercial source.

I again want to thank Mr. Deffenbach for providing such a wonderful service to our community.

I'm sorry for your bad experience, but many many folks have found APRSISCE/32 completely usable so I must have done something right.

Asking me to enter in detail everything all over again is not what I would expect from you.

I read them all and was left confused or I wouldn't have asked for details on what I'm CURRENTLY being asked to support.  You mentioned KPC-3+, you mentioned KISS mode, you mentioned D710 TNC Port.  They are all completely different beasts and I would like to make sure I'm tackling the same one that you NOW have connected and are trying to make work.

Why doesn't your program just program the tnc when a port is configured?

Because there is no way a single developer can ever hope to support every APRS/packet device on the market.  That's why I implemented <Open/CloseCmd> capability.  So the USERs can develop whatever magic incantations work for their own hardware, including future devices that may need something different yet again.

Is there a terminal window I can open to talk to the tnc?

I don't believe in re-implementing non-APRS functionality that would be used once when setting up new devices and never again during normal operation.  Use putty, use tera-term, use anything you want to talk to your TNC for configuration.  Heck, you can even use <Open/CloseCmd>s to send strings to the device.  Then use APRSISCE/32 to talk to that now-configured device.

I have never gotten this program to function in all the years I have tried

I'm sorry that has been your seemingly unique experience.

BTW, have you read the Wiki?  Specifically http://aprsisce.wikidot.com/tnc-kpc-3

So, please tell me explicitly and in detail what you are connected to right now.  And I'll help you get it working properly.

The reason you are NOT seeing stations on the map is definitely due to that <UI> that is prefixing every single packet.  They are being interpreted as position-less status packets according to the aprs101.pdf specification.

Just a though:

If you are still having issues you can rename your APRSIS32.XML to APRSIS32.bak before starting the program.

You will have to put in your callsign and relocate yourself on the map, but APRSIS32 will create a fresh new XML.

   Clean start!

Afterward, you can use a file compare tool to see what the changes are and maybe determine what caused the issue.

I get my messages directly through email and typically respond the same way.

Looking through this topic and searching Groups.IO for such things as your name (Rose or Christopher Rose) or 'no symbols' did not get a thread that I could shed light on the request.

From memory, I believe you said you had a scroller full of stations, but no symbols on the map.

A few things:

1. Are the stations heard:

    a) RF?

    b) IS?

    c) Both?

2. Is there anything just to the right of the "zoom bar" next to the scroller?

What are the settings of Menu >View?

3. What are the settings of Menu >Configure >Scroller?

4. Did you scroll out to see if they were outside the map boundaries?

5. Might they all have timed out?

    Is the scroller, scrolling?

6. What is the value in Menu >Configure >Screen >Symbol

Those are the items I can think of that may impact the viewing of symbols on the map.

YAAC works right out of the box. Open commands to put KPC 3 into kiss mode is in the program. Saying the Kantronics KPC3+ is a strange tnc is absurd. There aren't many tnc's on the market. I tried different port configurations to try to get one that worked. I said that yesterday. No joy. Having to use 3rd party communications software to program a tnc to use with your program is rediculous. Sorry I wasted everybody's time. Have a good life. I am getting off this merry go round.

Re: Scroller full of stations, no symbols on map

I think most of the confusion is over KPC+ vs Kenwood radio.  I will make the assumption you are looking at the KPC3+ and getting that working.

Most older TNCs (like the KPC3 and KPC3+) can be placed in KISS mode and will stay in KISS mode through power cycles.  So the easiest way to configure them is externally (through a terminal program or script).  K5DAT put together a nice package to handle this, and includes a nice batch file to run them in sequence http://www.175moonlight.com/hamradio.html.  I spoke of it before, but couldn't find the link.  I've included it here.  The first CYAN colored text is about the KPC3+ and there is a link to a zip file.  The zip file has the batch file, execuatebles, and a README.txt.  I know this has worked for many people.

You can have APRSIS32 "program the TNC" when the port is configured, but there are so many different TNCs with so many different methods that a limited number are in APRSIS32 by default.  Almost all were current, specific APRS radios (built in TNCs) like the Kenwood D700.

I assume you already have a KPC3 port and just need the proper OpenCmd and CloseCmd commands.
   Instructions are here: http://aprsisce.wikidot.com/tnc-kpc-3
You can manually edit the APRSIS32 XML file and add the specific commands for your TNC (assuming the KPC3) by:
1. Close APRSIS32 (it must be closed or the edits are overwritten)
    specific instructions are here: http://aprsisce.wikidot.com/doc:editing-xml-configuration
2. Open the APRSIS32.XML file in a text editor
    a) find the RF port
        Easiest to search on "RFPort"
   b) replace any existing <OpenCmd>
          <OpenCmd>{old text}<OpenCmd>
          <CloseCmd>{old text}<CloseCmd>
with (slightly modified to add delay if the TNC doesn't respond right away)
          <OpenCmd>^M~!cmd!1</OpenCmd>
         <OpenCmd>^M~!cmd!2</OpenCmd>
         <OpenCmd>XFLOW ON!!0</OpenCmd>
         <OpenCmd>FULLDUP OFF!!0</OpenCmd>
         <OpenCmd>INT KISS!!1</OpenCmd>
         <OpenCmd>RESET!!0</OpenCmd>
         <CloseCmd>^192^255^192~!!0</CloseCmd>
         <CloseCmd>^C^C^C~!!0</CloseCmd>
   c) Save the file
   d) Reopen APRSIS32.exe
These <OpenCmd> and <CloseCmd> commands have worked for my KPC3 (prePlus).
I will say that the KPC3 expects hardware flow control when in KISS mode because the computer is in full control of the TNC and the only feedback are those hardware flow control lines.Using 3-wire serial (TXC, RX, & Gnd) caused me headaches until I swapped the hand made cable for a full serial cable with RTS/CTS.

Also, the CD setting of the KPC3 worked best in "Software" mode.  The CD LED would come on with my KPC3 at times with no RF signal (probably a faulty radio SQL).

I hope this helps.  I suggest the K5DAT method, as I know it worked for several others.

Thanks everyone for their input. Lynn, I am trying all the options to open a port that the kpc3 might like. So far no joy. Your program only has so many options. If you had an option for the kantronics tnc's I would like to see it. That would be the port label then. Randy, I don't know where to look for the TNC command set. I looked at the xml file and didn't see anything like that. Sorry.  Robert, menu configure scroller has all checked. Menu view all is checked. Screenshot attached for other questions you had. Thanks again all

If this is a 710 packet port, why did you call your RF port KPC3+?

Must be in KISS mode.  Stations have * so heard on RF.

What does the W8KPU station show? The call comes back to Swartz Creek just west of Flint?

Seems you've still got a setting off somewhere.

Wait.. that's a KPC3+ tnc. I think you might not be in KISS mode.

What are the <OpenCmds> from your xml file for that port again?

Just restarted to get some data. The stations showing regular icons do have position data attached when I click on them.

Just guessing from the screenshot. But it looks like it hasn't been running very long. Probably most of the red dots are sitting at 0, 0 off of Africa. Maybe zoom out more and see if you can see anyone else.

I zoomed out to see most of my state(MI). Some call signs I recognized should have been in view.
I will look at the settings you have here and respond by tomorrow.

There are lots of us out here.

You received two different responses,  one from the author of the program.
