Igate verification

Yatharth Verma

Greetings..from India!

I have just started using APRSIS32 again after a hiatus of 2 years, therefore there is something which I need to seek help for.

First of all, about my installation:

1. Intel i5 CPU with 4 GB RAM
2. Windows 8.1 operating system
3. RTL-SDR radio dongle for RX with UZ&HO sound modem (working correctly)
4. Homebrewed QFH antenna

Now my problem:
I am receiving APRS CQ packets from an ISS pass correctly. I say correctly since it gets displayed on the sound modem screen (text pasted below):

1:Fm RS0ISS To CQ <UI R Pid=F0 Len=36> [16:12:53R] [+++]
>ARISS - International Space Station

This also reaches APRSIS32 in the log of the sound modem port:
Port(UZ7HO):2020-04-16T10:42:53.908 AGW:AX.25[0] RS0ISS>CQ:>ARISS - International Space Station

But I am unable to verify (rather I don't know how to verify), whether this packet is being Igated or not. Please help me find out this. And also whether it is reaching aprs.fi or not?

I shall be grateful for any help.

Best regards,
Yatharth

I must say that in my area the APRS traffic has been significantly lower than normal.
I can't say when the last time I saw more than one or two mobile stations on my map.
In the past, there would be 5 - 20 stations moving around at any given time.

Re: Using NWS County shapefiles for other packets

Lynn Deffenbaugh

And I completely forgot about the following which should let you play with MultiLines.

Multiline Creation in APRSISCE/32

APRSISCE/32 now has a rudimentary multiline object creation capability built in. Follow the procedure below to create your own tracked objects and convert them to a MultiLine object.

  1. Right click at one end of your line or one point on your area. From the Coordinate cascade, select "Create Object HERE" and give it a name and comment. You'll need to keep it Enabled, but you do not need to check any of the Vias. The screen should center and lock on your new object.
  2. Drag and pan to the next point along your line or area. Again, right click, but this time select "Move <ObjName> HERE" from the coordinates cascade.
  3. Repeat step 2 as many times as necessary to build up the line or area boundary using the tracks you're making with the object. I don't enforce the 23 limit yet, so please don't say it's broken if it breaks.
  4. If you don't like the most recent point you added, you can left (normal) click on the object itself and select "Shrink Track" from the new "My Object" cascade. After confirming, the object track will have the most recent point removed.
  5. When you have all of the line segments tracked, or are one step from closing your area, left (normal) click on the object name itself. From the new "My Object" cascade, select "Track to Area" or "Track to MultiLine".

When APRSISCE/32 creates the Multiline object, it takes into account the distance to the most distant offset, and uses that to determine the scale required, and then attempts to find the best fit for each vertex defined.

Now you can compare your object's track with the line or area boundary that you got. Expect LOTS of error depending on the size of your
maximum offset. Also, since MultiLine objects are relative the object position, don't be surprised to see the line or shape move intact if you
decide to start over with the same object!

Re: Using NWS County shapefiles for other packets

Lynn Deffenbaugh

Actually, I would recommend looking into using the NWS MultiLine format for this purpose.  It requires nothing to be installed except an APRS client that supports this display.  You can't transmit the same level of detail as a local shapefile selection can deliver, but you also don't need to have shapefiles installed to see the described area.  Another advantage is that the base packet still supports location, symbol, and comment text, unlike the shapefile selection stuff.

This is what KJ4ERJ-15 uses to put the footprint circles around the ISS and PSAT* satellite objects.

As for where the flood symbol comes from, it is the "product code" that is "FLS" for "Flood Statement" in your example packet.  The "source" callsign is the NWS office (or zone) and product code concatenated together.  In ARPSISCE/32, I went through all of the product codes and selected symbols for them for display.

The MultiLine format is generated for weather alerts as well and is what carries the non-shape shapes that are actually drawn by the weather forecasters themselves when alerts are issued.

And yes, this originated in the USA, but the Australians are doing their own thing.  The base pages for this information is (although the Australian page didn't come up when I just tried it):

I'd have to go check the source code to see what the conditions are that trigger the shapefile lookup, but I know the multiline is simply the presense of the proper }xxxxxx{seq# at the end of a packet.  Here's a few samples from the satellite objects:

KJ4ERJ-15>APZTLE,TCPIP*,qAC,NINTH:;ISS *234348h4637.47N\09311.67WSMsg4Pass }k1mkNbrQzAq5a1N5;A+Q#b*kN{!wJU!
KJ4ERJ-15>APZTLE,TCPIP*,qAC,NINTH:;PSAT *234355h3709.89N\10424.05ESMsg4Pass }k1kpNhnTz@t1c,N19@(T"h.pN{!w0'!
KJ4ERJ-15>APZTLE,TCPIP*,qAC,NINTH:;PSAT2 *234424h2649.97S\13728.36WSMsg4Pass }k1iuNne\vEz0l'N00E#\&n7uN{!wm<!
And lots more at https://aprs.fi/?c=raw&call=KJ4ERJ-15 (but aprs.fi thinks the satellites fly too fast!)

Oh, and the !xxx! as the "sequence" was specifically chosen to make it different than an NWS multiline which will always have a letter or digit as the first character after the {.

Re: APRSIS shutting down

Anthony Mascola

That's great.  I'm still not able to get either version working consistently unfortunately.  The development version seems to lose my GPS position feed.  I have reverted back to the production version and have to restart it every hour or so as it crashes but I can restart it and it works for a little while.  I don't always realize when it crashes and sometimes have been driving for awhile and after I get home to review I notice that my position feeds to APRS terminate well before the trip did.  Somehow with my hardware or settings neither version is stable.  If I use the development version I can't track my position while mobile nor beacon my position as it still says "No Fix" despite my transceiver having the correct data and the same settings in the production version working.  Anybody have any ideas about why this is happening?  As before I am using a Blutronium serial to USB connection.  See prior email.

Your idea just might be THE solution to BOTH my problems/concerns!  THANKS!!

Secondly:  I managed to get the APRSIS32 software running properly again (HOORAAAYYYYYY!!), as of Monday 3-30-2020 @ 9 PM CDT, by changing the APRS I-Gate WIN XP PC's IP Address assignment to DHCP/dynamic, and hard-setting the desired IP Address within the AT&T DSL Router FOR the WIN XP PC, as a "Fixed-Private" permanent IP Address.  The I-Gate seems to be running just fine now, but I'll have to wait and see whether it STAYS that way for the next couple of days or not.

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks!   I sincerely appreciate it!

Noel,

I JUST changed the dedicated WIN XP desktop PC back to DHCP IP Address assignment, and once a new IP Address was assigned, lo & behold, the APRSIS32 software acknowledged the connection and changed the message across the screen header from "APRS-IS Delayed" to "APRS-IS OK"....... for about 90 SECONDS, at which point the Wi-Fi connection started toggling between connected and disconnected for about 2 full minutes.

After the 2 minute "toggling" episode, the Wi-Fi connection finally stabilized, and for the past 5 minutes, the APRSIS32 software has been operating PROPERLY.  Now I'll have to wait and see how long it lasts THIS time.

The WIN XP Network Connections screen says the Wi-Fi connection Signal Strength is "Excellent", with 5 out of 5 signal strength bars solid!

Thanks for any advice.  I'm all ears for any outside help at the moment.

I am a total NEWBIE at using APRSIS32 software, and have been TRYING to learn by reading thru the APRSIS32 Manual, but most of the info in the manual is going over my head, as far as HOW/WHAT needs to be properly setup the APRSIS32 software to do what I THINK I want/need it to do for my I-Gate operation.  I am a licensed Motorola RADIO repair technician by trade, but only have just enough technical knowledge on computers/APRS software to be known as "Dangerous".

My situation is probably going to be best handled via direct phone call contact, as I have been battling with the exact same, specific problem, running APRSIS32 for my I-Gate system operation, ever since I initially put my I-Gate system on the air.  I HAD been able to get it back up & running on my own during previous failures, but that was until tonight (Sunday / 3-29-2020).

Problem : Approximately every 36-48 hours of continuous operation on the WIN XP PC, the Wi-Fi adapter connection would be LOST, and it would refuse to re-connect to my in-home ATT DSL Router. NORMALLY I could get it to reconnect after either unplugging/re-plugging the USB adapter, and/or rebooting the PC and restarting APRSIS32 application.  Once wi-fi connection was re-established, everything operated just FINE for I-Gate operations again.  Not anymore.

My I-Gate Station/System physical setup Background info:

Am using COM1 RS232 db9 port of WIN XP PC to Tiny-Trak 4 2-way tracker unit/TNC in KISS mode. TT4 is connected to mono-band 2 Mtr mobile radio used as a base station with 70' HAAT omni antenna. No RADIO or TNC operation issues need troubleshooting. Only the PC / software portion is having issues.

Am running APRSIS32 Development version Client (by KJ4ERJ Built JAN 21, 2019), on an old donated Windows XP desktop (HP-Compaq) PC .... (Probably my whole problem??? JUNK/P.O.S. computer?)

I HAVE been running the I-Gate system 95% successfully for a couple months now, with only the afore-mentioned Wi-Fi connection failure, reboot/re-connection issues.  My System has now, after another wi-fi connection loss and re-establishment cycle, FAILED to restore normal I-Gate operation, and has reverted back to Digipeater ONLY operation now.   The APRSIS32 screen display now constantly alternates between "TT4A OK", & "APRS-IS Delay" at the top of the video monitor screen image. I CAN get it to Transmit manually, over the RF side, to a distant neighboring I-Gate Station, or digipeater path, by clicking on the Transmit function button in the APRSIS32 software. My station also DOES RECEIVE APRS stations over the air, just fine, according to the software screen displayed callsign lists.

ALL issues seem to be with the computer failing to maintain a continuous Wi-Fi connection to my in-home AT&T DSL Router Wi-Fi connection, for more than 48 hours.  All OTHER Wi-Fi devices in the household (approx. 6 other items) are working just FINE, with ZERO connectivity or failure issues.

I'm using a USB plugin Linksys WUSB6300N Adapter for Wi-Fi connection between the WIN XP PC and the AT&T DSL Router. (Had previously been using Belkin Wi-Fi Adapters, with exactly the same issue. No improvement or change in symptoms when recently changing from Belkin USB adapter to Linksys USB WI-Fi adapters.)

I have already consulted with a local computer guru, & changed the WIN XP PC from dynamic/DHCP, to Static/Assigned IP Address. The thought was that the DSL Router was occasionally re-assigning dynamic IP Addresses to various items in our home, and may have run out of available addresses, or had developed duplicate address conflicts.

The change from Dynamic/DHCP mode to Static IP operations mode lasted exactly 36 hours before the final failure tonight.  (I've also already confirmed, in the AT&T DSL Router IP Assignments Table, that the IP Addresses listed in the Router DO match the Static IP Address in the WIN XP PC.  No IP Address duplication or mis-match between the two devices.)  I DO have access to the AT&T Router's internal Web Server data, with read/write privileges.

I have already gone thru numerous attempts to restore the I-Gate System operations by rebooting the PC, and looking in the APRSIS32 settings & restarting the application,  to see if something got corrupted/changed, but I don't have enough familiarity with all the different APRSIS32 software settings to know what's right or wrong.

My I-Gate system is now stuck in Digipeater ONLY mode. (I have confirmed this by verification of my station Beacon & Status/Comment data appearance times,  with the respective RF Path used, on the APRS.FI website "Raw Data" search for my I-Gate station Callsign.)

I'm pulling out what little hair I have left.   Please HELP!!!!

ANY help is appreciated!  THANK YOU!  Any takers?????
