A fellow ham wants to use aprsis32 to forward Winlink notifications from aprs-is to rf so he can get them and read the messages on his Kenwood mobile transceiver.

Since I am not a Winlink user and the stuff I have found on the web is obscure to me, I cannot give him much help. I have learned (I think) that the notifications are messages from one of the Winlink servers and should be on aprs-is. After that I'm lost.

Is there a message guru (Lynn?) that can help us?

Found the issue.  Setting the value of Quiet Time in Configure>General only changes the Quiet Time value for the APRS-IS port.  I had change the Quiet Time value from Configure>Ports>(144.390) to set it to 180 seconds.  It was still set for 60 seconds.

I set the Quiet Time for 180 sec. in the Configure>General Window.  After allowing the application to run for hours, I'm finding that the RF port will close and reopen after 60 seconds of no activity regardless of the Quiet Time value.

A review of the TRACE log for my RF port (144.390) shows the port terminating after 60014 msec vs 60000 Quiet, even though the value is set for 180 sec.

Is there another parameter that I should be looking at, or can I edit the XML file to change the value.

I discovered on my own IGate's Bluetooth-linked TNC, the maximum value of 300 seconds (5 minutes) is long enough for most of the time, but when 2m closes down, I can no longer decode some of the further digipeaters and recently the closest digipeater is not working as well, so sometimes the connection closes and opens due to the Quiet Time setting.

In some upcoming release, I may increase the maximum allowed value to 900 (15 minutes) to account for this.

James, thanks for the explanation.  Here I am using a Timewave TNC in KISS mode on a 2 Meter RF with a fair amount of activity, so I'm thinking experimenting with quiet time of 3 to 5 minutes.

hiya Lynn

thank you for your reply i will check this but i found if i turn off APRSIS SSID  Beacon and just follow the handie SSID it worked ok and it followed me everywhere i went which is what i wanted.

As for the handie SSID disappearing when i get out off range of a digi repeater  i found when the handie transmitted it showed up straight away on the map the handie settings for transmit are smart beaconing so it follows every turn most off the time i will do some more tests just to make sure but i feel it is doing what im asking for

KA1UDX-1 has been a problem station for a long time in this area.  Delaying packets, gating everything from IS to RF.  He has reset it in the past and made changes but it goes back to clogging things up around here.

Brace yourself because when you transmit a message on RF, the D72 will adopt the APRSIS32 callsign-SSID and then your follow will quit working because M0XAN-7 won't beacon until after the next radio power cycle.

Why is the weather data being transmitted over both WX2NJ-14 and WX2NJ? Also, the Icon shown on the Internet for the WX2NJ is the blue WX icon and not the Yagi-House.

APRSis-32 and the Kenwood tmd72 what i learnt

first of all i must thank everyone for replying to my ask for help

i know have the system working how i want it to work ie track me and show everyone.

while doing this i found some interesting things thanks to all help so let me tell you how i did it 

1. first off all quite simple i loaded the software on to a windows 7 note book then i updated the software i think this was important.

2. i filled in the relevant details  ie call sign  etc( M0XAN-1) 

3.  conected handheld and loaded up the relevent drivers for the notebook to talk to (important) 

4. i went to the config setting and open up a port i used the pre configured KWD710(aprs)and told it what com port to look at mine was 3 

5. now you need to set up the SSID on the handheld (this is were i went wrong and thanks to you all for your help ) mine is M0XAN-7

6. also you need to make sure the settings on the handheld is talking to the computer this is simple just open pc port (menu 350)

7.  set frequency in the UK its 144.800Mhz 

8.  now you should be receiving data 

9. Now comes the hard bit you will find that the handheld and the software will want to beacon both SSID's goto enables tab on in the software drop down the menu and un click beaconing enabled and that will stop the software telling the handheld to stop transmitting the software SSID (in my case M0XAN-1 ) 

now your thinking but it still showing on the screen yes it will but there will be no RF/internet beaconing from that SSID.

10. what will happen is the SSID thats from the handheld (M0XAN-7) will beacon and will show up on the map  and this is the one if you right click and follow will move you round the map with you 


anyway thats is as far as ive got with the software i think next will be how to use the message system but i will leave that for another day

Well, I was hoping I could cheat it this way -- that perhaps the software might take turns polling data from the com port.  It did seem to be the case, but I didn't get a chance to experiment heavily -- so I may have missed some irregularities.

It would possible to programmatically make this well-behaved, but you'd run the risk of periodically missing packet data as it was reading the GPS unless something could be done at a lower level.

I'm no data cable expert by a longshot, and haven't done any programming of devices since the RS-232 days.  But it seem at least theoretical that the GPS + packet data can be streamed simulteanously (parallel?) via USB if the connection is usb-to-usb (and not usb to prolific-type converter back to serial)?  I guess the original NMEA standard was also serial-based, so I suppose that may be another handicap.
