Tactical Call Signs

apenadragon <kc2ant@...>

AKA Nicknames revisited

Snipit from a conversation including Bob WB4APR on the APRS group

[quote]
Yes, I agree that as long as people take PRECAUTIONS, then local assignment
of tactica calls can work. What I wanted EVERY software to do when using
locally assigned tactical calls was to make sure that BOTH the REAL CALL and
TACTICAL call must be shown on the map and in every instance in the program,
THEN I AM OK WITH IT.

KC2ANT>I'm hoping that Lynn KJ4ERJ will see this part and can add this as an option for APRSISCE/32

So IGNORE me if all these precautions are taken.
Your doing a great job. I agree with you completely that it is easy for me
to say to chage the calls in the radios in the field, but in practice with
so many dumb trackers and so few people remembering how to change them, it
is a moot point.

KC2ANT> That is the problem, not everyone does KNOW
how to change the radio...
The good news now that we have 8 models of APRS radios out there and more
and more of the trackers are 2-way devices, that more and more of our
mobiles will be able to easily change their tactical calls on the fly.

KC2ANT>And again, it still relies on the end user being proficient enough with their own gear to get the job done at a moments notice. Theory and reality part ways at this point.

I'm all for everyone knowing how to run their gear, but I've learned a long time ago that I (we) need to find ways to overcome the lacking of others to make things work when the brown stuff hits the fan. Thank you USMC and Emergency Services for those lessons.

You can test these sounds by unchecking Enables / APRS-IS Enabled and then re-checking it. I'm suspecting it's the re-connect (bonk) that you're hearing as the other is just a ding. When anything goes wrong on a connection, I invoke MessageBeep(MB_ICONHAND) and when things go back to normal, I use MessageBeep(MB_OK).

However, now that I look at the code, I actually have the condition backwards! For you "C" programmer's out there, the following is worng, isn't it?

if (ActiveConfig.Enables.Sound) MessageBeep(newState?MB_ICONHAND:MB_OK);

Wow, all these years (yes years), and I've had it backwards the whole time. Expect a revision on this one, but maybe not for 2.5 weeks, unfortunately.

Interesting. Obviously a bit of political pressure being brought to bear on GCHQ bosses to distance themselves from a report that could be harmful to the PLT industry. Pathetic that they used a DA notice to get The Register to remove the name of the report's author. However Google's cache is not so compliant so I was able to find out it was Nick Negus who is G6AWT. Re: APRSISCE Sounds...

I seem to get the "bonk" every time I start APRSIS on my netbook (MSI with Windows XP).  It always comes up functional, so I never really looked at what might be causing it.

On my other desktop (Linux/Wine), it was an issue with the network device availability, but immediately corrected itself when Linux allowed WINE the device.  I guess I just learned to ignore it from that and never checked on the netbook.
When I get home, I'll check the logs and see if I can find the error on the netbook.

I currently use standard Windows-supplied sounds in APRSISCE/32.
However, I do have a ToDo item to make all sounds user-configurable and
even let you specify your own .WAV files to play for various events.
This will probably happen around the time that the user-configurable
notifications comes to the top of the priority list.

Do you know what event is causing the "bonk"? In my case, it's usually
that the Quiet Time on the APRS-IS connection has expired and
APRSISCE/32 is recycling the connection which actually gives me a bonk,
a couple of clicks, and then a happy sound. The same thing (minus the
clicks) happens if you lose the GPS fix momentarily.

Good luck with that item on your "to-do" list.  If you get it, please let us know.

I messed with exceptions in Norton several times, but they only worked until the next update arrived.  No matter where or how the exception was setup, it still seemed to reset when the new update was provided.

I finally disabled Norton (following Lynn's thought process of "more trouble than it's worth"), and moved to MS Security Essentials (talked about here on this very topic).  So far, so good.

Oh, and my wife really like the fact that her e-mail runs better now too!  She detested Norton's SLOW processing of e-mail.

Art,

I had the same issue with Norton - it thinks APRSIS32 is a virus.  I ended up turning off that part of Norton and leaving it off - did not like that fact that it behaved like that.  I have it on my ‘to do’ list to try to figure out how to add exceptions to Norton, but haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Be aware that there are speed limits in APRSISCE/32 as well as aprs.fi.  If you relocate instantaneously to the UK, it may take several Transmits with delays between for other stations to believe your new location.  The same thing will happen when you relocate back "home".  To test QRU, it might be better to start a new instance with a unique-SSID (-IS only, so it doesn't have to be -00 through -15) and set your initial position somewhere in the UK.

Depending on your and the QRU server's filters, you may also be able to send "?HOSP 20000" to QRU and get a response of hospitals from around the globe sent direct via Item-In-Message to your APRSISCE/32 instance at your home location.

Lynn (D) - KJ4ERJ - Author of APRSISCE for Windows Mobile and Win32

PS.  If only APRS-IS had a filter on message target, the QRU servers would use that to ensure that they heard every QRU query.

There are several "UI-Messenger" programs out there. Could you identify which one you are referring to? I have used several with UI-View and they assume the SSID or the host and do not use a separate SSID. Now if you use a stand alone messaging program then that might be different.
