I should have added, my GPS output was NMEA sentences. For this to work with your GPS, it would need to output NEMA. I seem to remember some DeLorme GPS units only had a proprietary mode.
There are lots of very cheap options if you cannot get them to work.

I had a RS232 GPS and I had used an USB/RS232 converter. In the PC, it shows up on a virtual COM port. Can you do that with the DeLorme GPS?

Are you using a GPS connected to an USB port? If yes, is it mapped to a COM port? Is it now on a different COM port? I have had this issue before.
