Re: Sonundblaster

Michael Coslo

Final update. The problem was not with my audio levels. The problem was with the USB to Serial adapter as supplied by West mountain Radio. This adapter required both RTS and DTR to be enabled in order to trigger transmit. If it was not enabled, it would go into transmit mode and stay there. I tried the adapter with other programs, and it worked correctly with them. Every program that it worked did have some manner of allowing controlling RTS and DTR.

Normally with a commercial adapter, RTS and DTR do not need messing with.

I replaced the supplied adapter with a different one, and everything is working correctly now. Thanks much for the help.

The approach with DireWolf, SoundModem, and AGWPE are all the same..
Those programs handle the audio and PTT and communicate with APRSISCE/32
with either AGW protocol (emulation in the former two) or, also in the
former two, KISS over TCP/IP. Anytime there is a sound cared interface
in the configuration, APRSISCE/32 doesn't use a COM port, only TCP
communications to the program that is being a "soft" TNC.

Okay, I apologize - I noted that I'm using Soundmodem in my setup, but guess I wasn’t wasn’t completely clear on that. These instructions are definitely for something else.

I’m happy to switch programs.

Which program are you referring to, Robert?

AGW is a TNC to TCP/IP. It is not a serial port emulator. You can connect any TNC to AGW and it will decode the data and send it over TCP/IP to a computer as (pseudo) AX.25 packets. The implementation also includes a sound card implemented TNC (modem).

For the APRSIS32 configuration

Very SPECIFICALLY create the port:
From the >Configure Menu choose >Ports >New Port...
The next box you need to choose Type and a name.
Type: AGW
Name: Nomic {you choose what you want}
Then hit <Create> button

Now you need to choose the Port Type
There are 3 options: TCP/IP Bluetooth COMn
You must choose TCP/IP because AGW is a TCP/IP communication device.

The next box is the TCP Configuration.
Assuming the AGW application is on the same computer
For IP or DNS: localhost (or use
Port: 8000 (default for AGW. if you changed this in your AGW application, it must match)
Then click <OK> button

This will initiate the communication between AGW application and APRSIS32 without any COM port being configured in APRSIS32.

For the AGW configuration, you need to specify the port used for PTT.
Right-Click the modem icon for AGW in the system tray and choose Properties.
In the Select RadioPort box, choose the port you want to configure (if more than 1), then <OK>
The Properties for Port# will have a Tnc Setup tab which shows Select Port in the top left.
Under Tnc Type (SoundCard) you will see Mode KISS Simple and <Options>
The <Options> button says:
The PTT lines for Serial Ports are for Left Channel the RTS and fro Right Channel the DTR line.
This indicates that AGW is the place to configure the COM port to properly use the PTT features.

Again, if you are using AGWPE, you should not be telling APRSISCE/32
anything about any COM ports. That configuration belongs in AGW, not

In APRSISCE/32, simply configure an AGE type port and connect it via
TCP/IP to your AGWPE instance. Do not specify ANY COM ports directly in
APRSISCE/32. AGW will handle all of the interaction with the
SoundBlaster, the radio, and especially PTT.

APRSISCE/32 doesn't support any direct audio interface, nor does it
support PTT via any means. It only supports TNCs and GPSs on serial
ports, NOT soundcard or other radio interfaces.

Hi Stephen - the audio portion is working FB.

My problem is that as soon as I select the serial port and accept it, the radio goes into transmit mode, and the only way to shut it off is to select none and accept that.

It appears that the Rigblaster wants RTS and DTR selected. It suggests that in the manual, and the Rigblaster PTT and audio work well in other programs.

I have pretty good confidence that if I could somehow select RTS and DTR in APRSice/32, the setup would work equally well.

A simple thing to check would be the microphone settings in Windows and the software package. Make sure the correct sound card microphone is selected and the correct sound level (mic in and sound out are tracked separately).. Too high or low it will not work, or you could be sending out Windows chimes instead of APRS packets.

I’m certain this will prove me the town idiot, but I’m attempting to set up APRSisce/32 with my Icom 746 and a Rigblaster nomic.

Tried two different computers - a little Insignia Flex, and an HP Envy I57200 CPU @2.5 GHz Running Windows 10 Home.

I’m using soundmodem for an AGWPE.

I have the programs talking to each other and I’m seeing skawks and positions, but I’m having some trouble transmitting.

When I open a com Port, as soon as I accept it, it goes into transmit mode.

I’ve used the device before on other software, and as long as I have RTS and DTR enabled, it stops and starts like it should.

Any help is appreciated!
