Arlington "Disaster Relief Trials" 9/29/18

Paul Wilson KI4PW

As mentioned during Tuesday's meeting, Arlington County is holding a Disaster Relief Trials event on Saturday, Sept 29. The goal is to distribute relief supplies and perform other tasks using bicycles, in the event of an emergency.

Is it a competition, a drill, or a simulation? Seems like all three.

https://emergency.arlingtonva.us/drtarlington/

Sadly, it appears no bonus points are available for hams operating "bicycle mobile." Arlington CERT members will be providing communications support on amateur frequencies.

WWV and WWVH on the block?

Paul Wilson KI4PW

As reported in the link below, the Fiscal Year 2019 National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) budget request includes a provision to shut down WWV and WWVH.

Whether it will actually happen is of course in the hands of Congress.

SSTV from the ISS

kd9xb

The International Space Station will be transmitting SSTV today (Monday) noon to 3:30 pm and tomorrow (Tuesday) 9:25 am to 3:15 pm on 145.8 MHz FM mode.

Keep a transceiver or scanner receiver on 145.8 and patch the audio into a PC equipped with MMSSTV or similar decoding software. You might get a few images.

They usually use the PD120 SSTV mode. MMSSTV will automatically detect the mode.

Location: Arlington Central Library, Bluemont Room, 1015 N. Quincy St, Arlington. Ample parking is available on-site. Please note this is a one-time change for the July meeting only.

13 Colonies Special Event

Paul Wilson KI4PW

The 13 Colonies special event is now running through 0400 UTC on July 8 (midnight local time). It's a lot of fun, and you can learn a lot by chasing propagation across the bands. Work all original thirteen states, plus the two bonus stations for a "clean sweep."

http://www.13colonies.net

So far I have 11 states, plus WM3PEN in Philadelphia, on a mixture of SSB, CW, and FT8.

The ones that are eluding me: K2D (Conn.), K2J (NC), and the GB13COL bonus station. The pileups on SSB are formidable. Probably my best chance is to catch them on CW. The pileups on CW are smaller and more "civilized." Also, later in the event the pileups will diminish.

Happy Hunting, and Happy Fourth!

Received SSTV from ISS

kd9xb

I received an SSTV image from the International Space Station today at 12:45 pm EDT ...

https://twitter.com/SWRadiogram/status/1012755844423921664

They will continue transmitting SSTV images through Sunday at 2:30 pm EDT on 145.8 MHz FM.

Unless I'm using my transceiver for something else, I just keep it tuned to 145.8 MHz FM, and the MMSSTV software running. MMSSTV keeps received images for later viewing.

There is also the receive-only RX-SSTV, but it does not allow selection of a sound card; it just uses the default sound card.

Thank you sent to Alexandria Radio Club for Field Day

Michael Callaham

At 16:21 ET today I sent the following message to the Alexandria Radio
Club President (Monica KC2IAY), Field Day planner (Erik, KI4BXU), and
food planner and purchaser (Rick N4ASX):

8<- - - - - - - - -
Monica, Erik, and Rick,

I think I speak for all Arlington Amateur Radio Club members and net
regulars who attended the W4HFH 2018 Field Day, when I say it was
fantastically fun, a great experience in so many ways. For our newer
folks, it was a first Field Day. For old tops, it was a chance to
reconnect with Alexandria Radio Club members and meet others. The food
was great. It was a chance to operate and log. We thank you so much for
your kind invitation to attend.

73,
--Mike NW3V, President, Arlington Amateur Radio Club

Special Election at July 17 meeting

Michael Callaham

At the June 19, 2018, regular meeting of the Arlington Amateur Radio
Club, Activities Chairman Randy WB4MJF said he wished to resign as
Activities Chair effective immediately, for reasons he explained.
Cynthia nominated Gary KC5QCN to be Activities Chairman for the
remainder of the term. Gary said he would serve if elected. The
nomination was seconded.

Notice is hereby given that there will be a special election for the
vacant post of Activities Chairman at the July 17 regular meeting, which
will be at the Arlington County Central Library in the Bluemont Room.

Mike,
I will be attending Field DAY and so will Cynthia. I paid the food fee request at the Alexandria Club meeting for both of us, at Cynthia's request.

Subject: [AARC-PUBLIC] New poll for Field Day plans--please respond promptly

N4ASX of the Alexandria Radio Club has requested an updated estimate of AARC-related people (members, PUBLIC list members, net check-ins) and guests who plant to attend the Alexandria Radio Club Field Day and eat while there. Regardless of whether you responded to the previous poll, please respond to this poll by replying or by emailing nw3v =at= arrl.net . I have already posed this question on the ArlingtonARC Yahoo group and will pose it on the Arlington County Net on Tuesday night. If you plan to attend, please respond, but you need not respond more than once. My plan is to accumulate responses received before the net and on the net and provide N4ASX a total by midnight Tuesday.

Thank you and 73,

Good afternoon Mike,

I plan to attend field day, but my medical condition my change and
I would have to drop the event from my schedule.

I am also planning to attend the club meeting Tuesday if all goes well.
