Re: Encryption efforts in Colorado challenge crime reporters, transparency

Also the subject of a WP story ...

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/social-issues/last-of-the-scanners-are-police-security-measures-killing-an-american-obsession/2018/12/28/4e344a62-09f5-11e9-a3f0-71c95106d96a_story.html

And I recently purchased a Uniden BCD436HP at considerable expense.

Bad timing on my part.

Perhaps just as well, as I may never figure out how to use the BCD436HP.

The website www.radioreference.com has audio feeds of most of the non-
encrypted radio traffic.

Also, using this data, there are several smart phone apps that allow you to
listen to the radio traffic.

This would be a free method to check out much of the radio traffic
available in the area.

The small supplied antenna could help limit signals heard to those of
local interest. Configuration can do that, too, but this is where it gets
complicated.

The Saint Thomas More Cathedral School, where the Arlington Amateur
Radio Club usually meets, is closed today because of inclement weather.
The school follows the inclement weather practice of Arlington County
Public Schools, which are closed today.

As the club usually does in a case like this, we will have a net
(instead of a meeting) on the W4WVP 2-meter repeater, starting at 7 pm
ET. The net may or may not begin with a transmission of Amateur Radio
Newsline; that remains to be determined.

Please join us tonight on 145.47(-) MHz. A CTCSS (PL) tone of 107.2 Hz
is required on your signal in order to use the repeater.

If you want to decode the text, use Fldigi for PCs (Windows, Mac, Linux)
or TIVAR or AndFlmsg for Android devices.

The free software/apps can be downloaded form ...

or

(TIVAR is in a folder under AndFlmsg. TIVAR is receive/decode only,
thus simpler.)

Use a patch cord to get audio from your transceiver to your PC or
Android. Or an interface such a SignaLink. Or simply place the mic of the
Android or computer near your radio's speaker (acoustic coupling).

In Fldigi, turn on RxID, and it will detect the mode and center audio
frenquency (~1500 Hz).
