Re: OT Kenwood vs Yaesu

Ted-
What to buy?  Always a difficult question.  But one factor I believe should be high on the decision tree is:
"What brand is the most common personal radios among those who will need to operate the CERT Van rig?"  There will be one brand that more of your staff use than the others.  Poll the group and find out which!

The greatest problem I've seen with EM units is establishing and maintaining a group of qualified operators.  The technical capabilities of particular rigs are far less important that the ability of your operators to operate the rig under pressure.

Within a given brand, operating formats tend to be the similar - controls, menus, etc.  User familiarity with the particular brand through continual use of their personal rig goes a long way, not only to reducing initial training requirements, but increasing the time period before refresher training is necessary.  The last thing you need when the balloon goes up is to have to retrain the operators!  You really want to go from power up to handling traffic in about 1 minute.  From my experience, if your EM rig is not the brand the operator uses daily, the best you can hope for is about 30 days between hands-on refresher training.

Hope that helps!

GM,

your input appreciated.

I am asked with recommending a dual band mobile radio for our Medford CERT van. I provided the Emergency manager with brochures for the Yaesu 8800 and the Kenwood V71A. I also opined that I felt the Yaesu was a better QUALITY radio (maybe I should have kept my mouth shut !!)

So, the EM comes back with this brilliant question: "

Ted, can you or anyone you know quantify the quality difference between the two?  Is the Kenwood 95% as good as the Yaesu?  Half as good? "

Does anyone have any empirical data or info that suggests that one brand is 'better quality' than the other? Frequency of repair?

thank you for any input

Just a suggestion?

Maybe?

Possibly?

In case of an emergency?

Take the time to dig deep in your RAM and find/remember a ham that’s close enough to work on ground wave or scatter.

For me, I have Freddy, W0PE in Yorba Linda, about 5 km as the crow flies...

Plan in advance to have a “done deal” contact for Feb 29th...if possible.

But then, I guess, that could apply any day where the propagation if poor or there’s a CME.

Paul - the 365+1 doesn't have a page yet. I've been working on our new website and haven't made one for the existing site.

The rules for the 365+1 (that I *thought* I had put in the original email!) are simple:

Work at least one PSK-31 QSO on ANY BAND at ANY TIME OF DAY for each day of the year. The +1 is earned by doing the same on a LEAP DAY.

This award BEGINS at 0000 on 1JAN2016 and there is NO PLANNED EXPIRATION DATE.

Congrats on the WABOL Paula-

Best of luck with a new antenna (exciting!), and if I may, I really encourage you to add 30m,17m, and even 12m  if there is any way.  The WARC bands are a sure fire refuge when there is a digital contest (like RTTY) underway and you want to work PSK.  Also, 30m is a great alternative when 20m isn't open and 40m has too much noise.

Looks like you are making great progress on 24/7.  It will be yours before you know it!

Hi Paula,

Drat, I was certain that we had already made contact this year. I guess not. I will look for you. I'll be home on Thursday thru Sunday this week and Thursday (th 31st) next week.

Hope to see you on the air.

Till then, Merry Christmas,

Hey guys and gals – looking for help to finish up the WABOL 2015. I have worked 48 and only need those last two . . .

Here are the 48 LONPs I have already worked: If you are not in the list, please try to find and work me this week – I’ll be on 20 meters daytime and probably 15 and 40 meters for the West Coast Grayline.

Thanks and Merry Christmas! Going to dinner now, but will be on the air this evening. Cheers!

Recent additions to the log are

ZS2CR at 14:25 on 20M

HS0ZIC at 15:03 on 40M

FR4PG at 14:42 on 40M

9W6EZ at 14:52 on 40M

40M has been my most productive band lately between 12:00-17:00Z

I have always been an early riser so this works great for me.

Wishing everyone a very enjoyable time with family and friends over

the holidays. Sneak a little radio time in as well.

Try 40m at our West coast gray line.

Every morning at 7035.0 kHz.

They ‘re there.

I’ve had many qso’s with old man Suke, JM7OLW for a few years now between 1100z and around 1230z.

When he’s on, you’ll know it! I think he told me that he runs a few hundred watts into a 3 el mono bander at maybe 110’...30 meters.

He’s always strong, and his signal is very clean.

Paula,
I'm not on the "nice" list so I need to make amends or Santa will leave coal again this year.
I'll look for you on 20m.
I have seen your signal before and I have reached the West side occasionally so I'll try to help out from here.
GL on your quest.

Which award are you chasing that specifies particular call areas.
